gasoline smell in spare tire well
« on: June 08, 2013, 07:06:57 PM »
I went to remove my spare last night from the well area in my 78 wagon. I smelled gasoline in there. I dont keep a can in back. Where can it be coming from, a hole in the top of the tank? Hole in the floor back there? Anyone had this before?

about all that anyone can tell you to do is to investigate .. you have fuel lines in the area .. you have a vent tube in the area .. you have the filler tube in the area .. and as you say  a possible rust  thru at the top of the tank .. my 80 was rusted at the very top of the hump .. would only leak with a full tank ...

Look for any wet spots now & if you can't find any then fill the tank & check again. If it's not wet from gas then you either have a rusty filler tube or the vent hose on top of the tank is the problem. The vent isn't supposed to let gas out but it will vent a lot of fumes especially when it's hot out.
