No hole for front sump dipstick tube on 91 2.3?
« on: June 11, 2013, 09:59:01 PM »
Hit a little snag in my 2.3 swap. As Im sure you all know, you must use the pinto oil pan and pickup tube, which also requires the front sump dipstick and tube. However the hole for the front sump dipstick tube is not in the block that I can find. Is it not there or am I missing it? Can I drill a hole there for the tube or what? And how do you fasten it to the intake manifold once its on? I guess fabricate a special bracket somehow?

There should be a small plug for the forward hole. Have you removed the oil pan yet?  You can't see it until you do. I'm going to do the same on my 1985 Merkur XR4ti engine that I'm getting ready for the swap. As for the bracket I'm just reusing the old dipstick tube and adding a strap to the intake manifold.

It's can be hidden by all of that oil dirt etc. As I said I'll take a look at mine tomorrow.

The hole just wasn't there. I drilled it out this evening. Was a 23/64" hole, but its a tight fit with that size. The next size up is 3/8 and thats too big.  With this hole I still haven't got the dipstick tube down in the hole the last 1/8th inch yet, but I will. Then I will have to fabricate a bracket to bolt the tube to so it cant come loose (not that it will anyways).

Oh then I have to plug the other hole that was for the rear sump dipstick tube. Then I think the engine is ready to go in the car...

I have a 94 Ranger 2.3 in my 73. Dip hole to rear red siliconed a 3/8" bolt pounded in to block then drilled hole in corner left front of top of valve cover and use Ranger dip stick. It will go through head oil drain hole to pan and stick will bottom out in pan. I will get you picture later.    Fred   :)

Okay more info on the dip stick hole. First things first it's not on the oil pan rails, if you remove the intake manifold and move the PCV hose from the crank case breather you will see a FP that is part of the casting on the block. Now look straight down, that's the hole that's cast in the block. It's in between the distributor and the crank case breather mount. This marks a hole that the dip stick goes thru, it's plugged on rear sump old pans. In order to install the dip stick you have to remove the oil pan and punch out the plug. Remove the plug and install the plug from the bottom side of the block up on the rear hole. That should do it. I will post pictures tonight or tomorrow. Oh what is the meaning of the FP marking it's for Front Pump I guess. It does not mean Ford Product.

I do not know if there are any differences between the distributor and DIS blocks but I do not think that Ford would change the block much. The 2.5 blocks might be different however.
