Title: New shoes and a carb
Post by: Bobkitty on August 10, 2020, 08:47:20 AM
Hey all, I just bought a 79’ Bobcat, and have been prioritizing my fixes. The top two at the moment are the tires (dry rotted) and the carb. First, I have a set of 4 lug mustang gt/gx wheels, I’ve yet to measure for spacers but I’m thinking 1.5 inch will do the trick. I was wondering if you thought I’d be able to fit those with a set of 245/50/16 in the back and 225/55/16 in the front without any tire rub? Also, any suggestions for a decent stock replacement carb?

Thank you!

These are 225-60-16's on '88 Turbo Coupe wheels. The fronts rubbed slightly on the edges of the front fenders. The rears I had to space about 1/4" to 1/2" off the brake drum to clear the leaf springs. Just an FYI, these rather tall tires will really bog the car. Know your ratio before proceeding. I had 3.40's the second lowest gear (numerically second highest) than the lowest 3.55's and it was very slow to accelerate.

Here are some pix of 205 70 14s on my 73 wagon.

The rims are currnetly available bolt on aftermarket with no mods or spacers.

The front to rear diameter of the tires is about 24 1/2" and tho ground to axle center is 12".

With these wheels and tires, 4 spd manual and 3.40 rear end i  cruise at about 2000 rpm at 40 mph in 4th gear and about 3000 rpm at 70 mph and has pretty good accelleration off the line.

I also installed an adjustable cam pulley and advanced the cam timing about 6 degrees, installed a spanish weber dgv carb and recurved the distributor. This moves the power curve down about 500 rpm and my 2000 starts making power about 2400 rpm and still pulls well to 6000.

One issue with oversized tires on a stock pinto is that the engine doesnt have much torque below about 2600 rpm. They make max torque at 3000 rpm and max power at 5400 so even thought they might look good, the engine may not have the torque to move the car down the road. Also adding spacers may put an additional.loa d on the front suspension.

If you are interested i can look up the mfr and part number of the rims.

As far as the carburetor...

Do you live in an area where you need to meet smog check regulations?

DON'T EVER  buy a "REBUILT"  "stock pinto" holly weber 5200

The factory carb will perform well if reworked and rejetted properly, BUT when rebuilt many have the wrong jets installed and wont work properly since the weber design is very sensitive to jet mismatching.

The 5200s were fitted to dozens of model engines from 72 to 92 ish ford, chevy, jeep and many jet combos.

When i got my car it had a rebuilt 5200. Ran like crap barely revved over 4500 rpm. 18 mpg. I messed with the jets and got it to make power and rev to 6000 but then it got 10 mpg..

After experimenting with a lot of carbs a friend gave me a NOS dgv and it seems to run pretty well.

So the  better choice is a NEW weber dgv which are currently produced. Genuine webqer dgv are made in spain and called spanish webers.

Knockoffs are also made in china and other places. The factory jetting is usually ok for street use but can be changed but thats tricky..

The dgv may require some throttle linkage mods but the effort is worth it.

The best deal out there is this weber 38/38 DGAS  from of all places,  walmart when they are in stock.

If you can get one.. the price is rediculously low.

This carb is pretty much a performance model, somewhat larger than the 5200 with 38/38 mm bores rather than the 32/36mm bores in the 5200 and dgv with and "synchronous" NOT progressive like the holly and dgv, in that both venturies are linked to open at the same time. This provides better low end torque and also the linkage can be set up to use the stock pinto throttle linkage.

Good luck.
