need torque converter for C3
« on: April 20, 2013, 10:42:39 AM »
well.
I finally "bit the bullet" and had my 74 pinto C3 tranny rebuilt. (but then the bullet
came back and bit me!)  while driving it home, approx. 8 miles down the dirtyword
road a seal blew, making my journey look like a space shuttle parallel to the road.....
lotta smoke.  disappointment galore......co ntacted the garage, they came and got it,
said it would need a NEW torque converter..... and I was told they reused my old
one because they could not find/locate a NEW torque converter.
so, are there any new torque converters available out yonder somewhere ??
thanks

First thing to pop up in Google: http://cobratransmission.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1_382_384_385_393

Sounds like they didn't drain & flush the old one, now has contaminated your newly re-built trans.

Make sure all lines, trans (everything) is drained & flushed to get rid of all contaminates.

Hey grouchyandugly , that's bad news. But that's B.S. on their part, I just checked Autozone and if your order on line or have delivered to you they should be able to get one.... And just who were the idiots who can't do a simple parts check ? You should take it up with your local Bureau of Automotive Repair and the Better Business Bureau because they robbed you....I hate lazy good for nothing idiots...I also checked Rockauto and they do not have one, NAPAUTOPARTS.C om did etc.....This is just 5 minutes or so doing a web search, and I did not even use bing, yahoo etc. What the hell are those idiots using their computers for at work, surfing porn.....

The part number from Autozone is F39 for the torque converter price is around $99.00 plus a $10.00 or so core charge. NAPA lists some for the Ford Ranger but you need to know what size spline  etc...The Autozone on says it's for the 1974 Ford Pinto with the C-3 and 2.3. I hope this helps...No good rotten lazyass-ed mechanic idiots.....

What year engine is it ? The 1974 C-3 was a one off transmission after 1975 all of the C-3 had the same torque converter....I think the Autozone part is right. On the front of the car where the radiator is does the sheet metal have a 45 degree or so kick out on the corners or is it straight ? What did the door sticker on the drivers side say or even the front part a the VIN. Did some one change the engine/transmission on you ? Most 1973 Ford Pintos had the 2.0 etc...I know I asked but if the converter is different , than that's the problem with the transmission place.....Even so the are still idiots...Note if the Autozone part is not correct than the price goes up....to about $250.00 from the one I search for after replying....

thanks
however, I traded for a 1953 Jag XK120 kit car with a Pinto drivetrain, so I will not be
able to have stickers, etc, even a VIN on the original car; but the tranny is a C3
1974, as when the car was on the rack I personally checked the numbers on the
tranny's case.
in 2002 I had a beautiful  1952 Jaguar XK120 along with a lovely ISETTA bubble car.
Both (!) burned up in my garage when rats got into the battery cables on the Jag.  I
did not have insurance on either one; and my "home owners insurance" just laughed at
me.  so the opportunity came up for this, I swapped (great deal for my EX-WIFE....),
and because I will hit the lofty age of 72 next month, I feel I better enjoy what I can
when I can if I can as I can.......
thanks for all the info/advice/help

G&U make sure they tear the trans down and thouroughly clean everything especially the valve body. As far as the converter, the trans shop that you're dealing with should be able to send it to their supplier and have it rebuilt, if for some odd reason they can't, try Midwest performance converter, I don't know if they will have one or not but they can probably give you someone else to call if they don't. Sometimes that's just how the hunt goes. Anyplace that makes Torque converters should be able to cut yours apart and rebuild it.
Good luck with the project.

Grouchy!

I have a torque converter for a C3 pictured on my "Pinto Parts for Sale" ad on page 11.  It is pictured next to Gamera in the Godzilla theme part.  It is not new.  $35 plus ship

You are funny Grouchy.....I do have an idea though.......

You can patch that dipstick thing where it goes into the tranny pan with High Temp Silicone in the orange tube.

Silicone will not help me unfortunately.  My tranny leaks bad. I have to bring cardboard with me so it don't mess up the parking lot at work!!!  I don't want to leave a bad impression like I am a rube or something, I just started this job!

Dwayne, I don't have a bumper for you but by all means you can wine, dine and charm me!!!  Don't let me not having a bumper stop you!!  LOL!!!!  ;D
