Title: Need help on 1973 Air Conditioning
Post by: dianne on July 29, 2014, 12:28:35 PM
I am putting my air conditioner back in the 73. I do need assistance.

We are missing some hoses and everything looks good.

First question:

Will this fit: 15213-07025527

On Parts Geek page: http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/1973/ford/pinto/climate_control/a-fs-c_expansion_valve.html

Does anyone have a diagram of the hoses, or can send a picture of their factory setup? Need the hose routes also. My mechanic isn't certain how these should go in.

Any help would be appreciated.

This is a diagram we drew up. I ordered a Chilton manual for 71-75 Pintos and hopefully a diagram will be there if I can't get an answer here. I know, I know, who would want an AC unit on their 2.0 Pinto. I do, it get over 100 degrees here a lot and the only other vehicle I have with AC is the Galaxie 500 gas guzzler.

Thanks

Dianne- watching this thread with anticipation- I have that very task before me. Air on my 2.0 Yellow Runabout. Dave Kawa gave me some real good pointers during the Mississippi run Stampede that was really helpful, he put a system in his crus in wagon v6- really nice!

Me and my mechanic also Scott :)  He thinks we may just have to go out and get some hoses made. Dave, when he owned the car (brownie and now Milo), removed the AC from the car and used the condenser for an oil cooler for the trans. I had him put in a real oil cooler so I could get the condenser back for the AC. Problem is now I don't have all the hoses, only one usable, and some other parts that are needed. This was a factory AC unit though, and not a dealer add-on on my 2.0.

Pictures would help of course :) Some of the other parts are pretty standard on all Fords, but I hope we don't have to have custom hoses made, they get expensive.

Let's hope someone has factory air on their Pintos and can assist :)

The Chilton Pinto book I have shows nothing like the actual plumbing.

Any Ford a/c I messed with around those years was dealer installed stuff.

Below are some 1973 Pinto photos copied from ebay some years ago.  I believe they are of factory AC.  I have some photos of early models with compressor mounted higher above the alternator on the passenger side (suspected to be dealer installed).  My 71 had a dealer install but the compressor was mounted high on the driver's side.  Note that AC slows down the 2000cc engine significantly, feels like the emergency brake is partially on.  Maybe a newer design compressor like Sanden would be less annoying, but it would require custom brackets.  I suspect your original 40 year old hoses are beyond their useful life (mine popped at about 20 years).  Hope the photos help some.

Thanks, I need some below also if someone has some of those. I'm guess, it seems from the lack of response, that no one really has a factory AC setup.

I've owned 16 Pintos and have never seen a true factory ac. Many dealer add on's.

75 is when they started getting different. I would like a copy if possible :) Can factory and dealer add-on be that different?

Is it just the lines and hoses that you're replacing? Are you going to stay with your original compressor, condenser, and unit under the dash? Also your original unit was R-12, are you staying with it or converting to R-134? I know its a lot of questions but that needs to be considered. Plus the cost factor needs to be addressed.

It's hoses and some other components, the other components are the same on all Fords. I stayed with R12 on the Galaxie I have, but this is moving to R134 and I've gotten the conversion kit for that also. The hoses seem to be the biggest issue, but I can replace them with custom hoses I guess.

Have you gotten an estimate what this is going to cost putting it back together? I wound also check to see what an after market kit would cost from Vintage Air or Southern Rods. You said you had the R-134 conversion, but was that just the R-134 fill fittings?

Nothing on hoses yet, waiting on the diagram from Art. The R-134 kit has a bunch of stuff in it along with some cans. I'm not doing this work remember, my mechanic is, I only do the body work. This isn't my highest priority, would just like to get it completed I guess since it's hot. My 70 Galaxie has AC, so I have something cool to ride or the Spitfire with the top down. I traded my bike for the spitfire.

As for cost, I don't know yet to be honest. Need some parts, not too expensive and I think the hoses will be the killer. I'll let you know. Do Southern Rods or Vintage Air have hoses? I can call tomorrow I guess. Might be a good lead :)

Thanks Art. It's different, but maybe he can use it. I can't believe there aren't a bunch of Pintos from the factory with air.

I'll post what he says and does.

Thanks again Art!

You're quite welcome Dianne.. A/C was an option then and unless it was in a warm climate area dealers didn't order them for the lot since no one would pay extra for A/C when you didn't need it, but if someone did want A/C instead of ordering a car and take 6 weeks or better to get it, the dealer offered it as an add on and probably only took two days to get it and people jumped on that...

The reason I say chack into the price of a whole kit. You're going mto have to replace the condenser, drier, and hoses, and possibly the compressor. If you go that far all that is left is the evaporator and controls (thats whats inside the car). as old as your present unit is, you might as well replace everything. If you still have the compressor mount you are home free. Jack

I don't think replacing everything is the way to go honestly. I like having the factory AC unit. My 1970 Galaxie is older and everything is just fine in it and works great for being old. Everything else is fine, with the exception of some parts that I need to replace and hoses. I have all the brackets also and everything mounted fine.

Forgot to comment on this one. There are no under dash mounting units since the car was factory AC, so it's all contained.

I would assume that any under the dash is probably dealer installed.
