mustang parts
« on: March 29, 2013, 11:25:37 AM »
i just bought a 79 mustang(blown 4cyl) for parts it had, to use in my 79 pinto. im converting the pinto to a v8 (302). it had a spare c4 tranny that i neded, and i need a rear end. my question is about the rear end. i've read that they came with a stock 7.5 or 8 inch rear end (but ive also read that they all had a 9 inch). does anyone know about the sizes they actually came with or how to identify them? as far as i could tell it didnt have any markings.

If you can see bolts on the  the rear end cover , as you look toward the front of the car it's a 7.5. Who told you that a 1979 Ford Mustang could be used for parts ?  Are you sure it has the C-4 and not the C-3. Except for the engine , transmission ( some times) it has no parts in common with the Pinto. The Mustang that you are thinking of is the 1974-1978 Mustang II....The 1979 is the start of the Fox series of cars....Of which had very few parts in common with the Pinto..

79-85 mustangs only had 7.5 rears they NEVER put a 9 inch in any fox mustang stock. In 86-93 the v8 fox stangs got 8.8 rears unless swapped in by someone else.
You said it had a spare c4 does that mean its a V8 C4 or a 2.3 C4 there is a difference and the 2.3 one wouldn't last very long behind a V8.

the owner had  a spare c4, radiator, and a few other parts i mostly bought it for that and the rear end. he was gonna put a 302 in it. on the car it does have a c3. so saying its a 7.5 rear, would that be okay with the 302 in my pinto or should i keep looking for an 8inch?

(my plan was to take the 2.3 in the pinto now n swap it into the mustang when i put in the 302. could make a lil bit of money off of it as a running car.)

Id personally use a 8.8 or 8 inch behind the V8.
