Not a Pinto but a Maverick, still needs to be asked here since I like you guys better.
Because of Florida's random and few cold spells during Winter I have noticed my '70 will refuse to unlock the driver door. From the inside or outside. As well as the key in the ignition not able to turn. And yes, I've gotten this from every woman, it is the right key... ¬_¬ ... But when it warms up everything is golden. So far no lasting issues. Since its not suppose to get warm (78) again for another few days I am open to entertaining any "tricks" or "solutions" any might have to what the hell is going on.
In related information, I just recently got the car so the cold trick is new to me and the previous owner who is a friend who had it for 3 years, who got it from his father, who go it from their neighbor. I did find out mine was made in the Ontario, Canada factory. Maybe its spite of past colds?

squirt some wd40 in the lock on the door... where the key goes in.. should take care of it

It sounds like one of the grooves in the key was cut too deep. Cold shrinks metal & creates enough of a mismatch that the key wont work. Any locksmith should be able to cut a key that works better for 25 bucks or less.

If it's a copied key, and not an original, the Ford key code can be found on the door lock cylinders.

went and tried to open the driver door, fail. went in from the passenger side ignition turned. After a we attempts of wiggling the door unlocked from the inside. I dont keep anything in the card so its sitting unlocked. I can cut my own keys from blanks but I have no idea if the ones im holding are original or not. Im going to take the door panel off and investigate the lock issue. Thanks guys!

On my 78 wagon some keys I had made just wouldnt unlock the door or turn the ignition cylinder. They looked exactly like the original one I had. I didnt know if it was the tpe of blank or what. I went to a ittle hardware store in my neighborhood and while I was there I mentioned it. They said they could cut one that would workl and even let me take it out and try it before I paid them. I had 2 made.
Now in the winter my ignition cylinder was hard to turn and sometimes it would stick and it probably wasnt good on the starter. I never figured out why before the cylinder just went out anyway.

Stay away from WD 40 , use some powdered graphite. WD 40 is just a water displacer (Yes that's what the W and D stand for) and not a great lube for keys etc. And it will gunk up your locks and firearms in no time....
