Maximum revs for stock 2.0 rods.
« on: May 07, 2018, 10:54:47 PM »
Hi.. well I just got the sidedraft manifold done and am testing it on my stock  engine and getting ready to install my new engine.

The new engine is basically stock rebuild new bearings, oil pump, pistons, etc
Factory 4 speed
 .060 overbore
Stock rods
Forged stock low compression pistons down in the hole.
Head milled .040
Mild cam 272 degrees .430 lift
Pertronix ignition
Dual SU HIF carburetors.
3.40 rear gears
14 inch tires
Cruises on fwy at 3000 rpm.at 70 mph

The goal is to optomize for daily driver street use with emphasis on fuel economy, hence the SU carbs which can get 30-32 mpg on an 1800 cc mgb.

Not interested in racing the car except for occasional fwy driving.

My question is how many revs will the factory rods handle safely.  As I mentioned in my previous post about the SU carbs, with the carbs and factory cam I can easily rev to 5000 plus but have not been exceeding 5500.

I assume that with the cam and compression upgrades to the new engine, revs of 6000 plus are probably possible.  I have seen posts that the factory rods are "ok" to 6000 rpm.

Any opinions about more than that..

I ran 7000 rpm time after time in my 72 Pinto road race / autocross boy racer with a STOCK short block.  I x-rayed the rods at work and that's all. I do not think a stock 2.0L will do 7000 rpm with out a good cam and carbs.
Its better to be a has-been, than a never was.

Thanks dick..

I sort of figured the rods would be ok for 6000 but just wanted some peace of mind..

Years ago i had a capri with radical 2.0 with isky cam and 390 cfm holley 4bbl that i ran on the street in so cal for 4 years and it did 7000 with shot peened stock rods.

Did you by chance see the pix of  the manifold I built for the SU carbs?
