Maverick 8” Question
« on: February 19, 2012, 11:13:52 PM »
Hello, I want to get the rear swapped and sorted out prior to installing a 2.3 in my 73 Runabout. I have most of an 86 TC in my garage and have been inching towards a swap for a couple years. I still drive the 2.0, but she is really on borrowed time Yesterday, I picked up what looks to be a decent non-posi 8” out of a 71 Maverick.  It’s 56.5 wide and has the big brake drums and 4 ½ spaced 4 lugs.  Am thinking I could get a couple wheels that use the 4 ½ 4 lug for the rear, toss in a Ό inch spacer for width and be fine.   Other than losing the ability to rotate the tires front to back, are there other problems I am not seeing?  I will be looking for an MII 8” for another month or so, but want this part of the project completed before summer.

You will need to ensure that the spring perches fit I think the Maverick is a little to narrow or you have to alter the mounting holes for the U-bolts. Do a search for more info. Also have you figured out your cooling system IE the radiator.  You have to alter the 2.0 system or set back the engine for clearance issues. The 2.3 is longer and that's why when Ford installed the 2.3 the front has a kick out to give more room for the cooling system. As for the brakes, you can change the front brake disc to match the rear end.Try spring and things for all of the rubber/ poly bushings  and the spring isolators etc. Most of the aftermarket bushing sets do not carry the spring pads...

Thanks DR. Here is a shot of it installed.  I had all the hardware with the Maverick axle and it came in handy too. The perches actually centered pin to hole and the driveline fit.  I am planning to live with the 4.5 in the rear and 4.25 front patterns.  I looked at a bunch of wheels and was delighted at how many options there are.  The 56.5 “ vs. 57” width is now a non-issue and in a pinch, I am calling it a plus. The brake drums are 10” instead of 9”, so I drove around trying to see if I would have a balance issue, but it seemed fine to me.
As far as cooling, am looking for all the coaching I can get and am still reading over threads.  I really want to have the hood close and latch, but will still sleep ok if I end up using hood pins.

Just get a 8" out of a Mustang II (v-6 or v-8) and bolt it in.
Its better to be a has-been, than a never was.

Hi, it was for me. I actually had my hands on a MII (non-posi) complete rear, I pulled it on Saturday, hauled it up to the cash register and the guy rang up $408.  I put it back. Our Pick – n – pull has two areas, one regular and one Premier.  The Premier charges more, has a good late model selection, but I did not think it would be so outrageous. I would have gone to $150 or maybe $200 if it was a posi, but it was boat anchor.  I had the Mav rear at home and ready to go.  It went right on. My Pinto shocks, drive line and top rubber bolted right up. They do have the 4.5 wheel stud spacing instead of 4.25.

I was and lucky and one came with my 72. I will be having new gears installed and I have to clean it up as well. Like to have it as clean as yours for sure.
