manual swap shopping list
« on: April 02, 2014, 10:01:16 PM »
I'm wanting to lose the C3 and put a 4 speed in my 78 bobcat wagon.

Am I leaving anything out of the following list :

Transmission
Flywheel
Clutch
Pressure plate
Throwout Bearing
Pilot bushing
Shifter
Clutch pedal (don't need the whole assembly, the pedal will mount to the stock pedal mount, right?)
Clutch cable
Driveshaft (does it have to be a wagon specific driveshaft?)

Will I need a different speedometer cable for the manual?
Will I need a different crossmember?
Will I need a different starter?

anything else I'm misssing?

You'll need the whole clutch/brake assembly.
Your brake pedal is too wide.

Bbob, thanks for the advice, I'll defintiely get those parts new

Reeves, oh my god I can't believe I didn't think of that. I had originally planned on getting the whole assembly, but someone had said you could change just the pedal, that the  mounting system was the same.  I can't believe I didn't think about that there'd be no room for the clutch pedal :P

The bracket that holds the pedals is the same whether it's auto or stick so as long as you get both pedals & all the clips they can be swapped on. Make sure to get a set off a car with the same brake option you have. If you have manual brakes you need that pedal since power brakes uses a different one. The hole is either drilled in a different spot for different leverage ratios depending on power or manual or the length of the pedal is longer. I've never compared them side by side but I do know they differ. The clutch pedals are the same though.

The driveshaft should be the same length (car or wagon, stick or auto) but the yoke may need swapped. I repeat "may" since I'm not sure of the 4-speed vs. C3 yoke. I do know that the C4 & T5 use the same yoke so maybe the C3 & Hummer trans share the same yoke.

The speedo cable, crossmember & starter should be the same. I recently learned that there are 9 tooth & 10 tooth starter gears for manual versus automatic but I've never counted & just stuck starters in cars without issues so I don't think it matters. The rubber trans mount is the same whether auto or stick.
'73 Sedan (I'll get to it)
'76 Wagon driver
'80 hatch(Restoring to be my son's 1st car)~Callisto
'71 half hatch (bucket list Pinto)~Ghost
'72 sedan 5.0/T5~Lemon Squeeze

Pinto 5.0 is correct.  There are (I was told) four different pedal combinations used in the Pinto. 71-73, 74+ manual and power brakes and I don't know the fourth???  Maybe some year change between 74-80?  So, make sure you get the correct set.

You might look into a T-5, five speed as they may actually be more prevalent and cost nearly the same.  That is if you have 3.40 or 3.55 gears.  Otherwise, I'm thinking the gearing won't be beneficial. Reversing the trans mount (and slotting the holes with a file) and cutting the shifter opening forward about 2"-3" is about the only difference from what you need for the 4 speed.

Shifter boot is needed.

No, wagon driveshaft is the same sedan or wagon. However, the trans/rearend combinations may have different lengths.  My '73 wagon C-4 / 6-3/4" rear driveshaft worked perfectly with my T-5 / 8" rear.

T-5 I had issues with the cable end speedometer gear.  It hit the back of the housing, bound and caused the output shaft gear to move backwards. Grinding the tip of the cable gear fixed the problem.

thanks wittsend. I had originally been thinking T-5, until I found a 4 speed really close for 100 less than what the t-5s are going for, and the t-5s I found were a lot further away

Yea, I guess that rural location kind of hurts you.  I'm outside of L.A. and probably have as many as 10 self serve yards within 100 miles of my home.  A T-5 (trans only) out the door on a Pick Your Part 50% off sale (monthly) would be just under $100.  ALL the transmissions are $139.99 ($70 on sale day) with a $15 core.  Sometimes I forget how blessed I am and think everyone has  similar access.
