Looking for cargo measurement
« on: September 09, 2019, 08:00:40 PM »
Hello, I’m looking to purchase a 74 wagon, was wondering what the length and width of the cargo area with the back seats down. Thanks for any help.

Front to Back:
There is 62-1/2" that is from the edge of the rear hatch to the front end of the folded down rear seat. If you are dealing with something flat (thin), have the seats full forward and little to no tilt you MIGHT get an additional 8"-12".  On the other hand if the seat is rearward and tilted back you start to lose space once the item is about 6"-8" vertical.

Side to Side:
The maximun flat width is 41-1/2" due to the wheel well intrusion. The maximum width at the rear hatch is 46."  I did not measure the full interior width because of the other limiting factors but I would estimate the area on the fore and aft sides of the wheel well is about 48."

Vertical:
The hatch hinges  are the limiting vertical issue. The maximum is 26-1/4" though the roof is about 2" higher.

Actual use:
I was able to transport a washing machine ever so barely but had to remove the drain tube to get it to fit. I doubt all washers are the same size.  At first it seems a 48" wide sheet of plywwod will go in. And if you measure at the wheel wells it seems there is space for 48" as well. BUT..., the angles are different and I believe the plywood will not fit. Anyway, there isn't 96" for an 8 foot sheet anyway.

You're welcome. Glad I could help.

One thing I forget to mention. As much as the seats being rearward/tilted eats up space..., the rear hatch tilts forward as it rises upward and space (8"-12") is taken up there was well. Still, for a "small" car there is a decent amount of space.
