Anyone know where a good inexpensive rechrome place is? Last place I called wanted $650 for the back Galaxie bumper - that's nuts! I have a prefect one with some surface rust on it...

I've never had anything re-chromed, but I have bought absolutely perfect, shiny bumpers on eBay for a lot less than that. I bought a nice used rear bumper for the '79 Continental Mark V I had and a NOS rear bumper for my '72 Pinto Squire wagon. Even including professional installation by a local body shop, the two together cost me less than half that amount!

Have you considered broadening your search? The rear bumper on your Galaxie should be the same as on an XL or LTD. Was Ford still building Customs in 1970? If so, they would be the same also. If you decide to re-chrome, I'd be more concerned with the quality of the work than the price. Although I'm sure amc49 will disagree, my experience in automotive matters is that the cheapest way is seldom the best way. Hemmings Motor News has an extensive ad section that includes many services for
re-chroming, used, or possibly even reproduction parts. If you don't subscribe, it might still be well worth the news stand price to pick up an issue. In the meantime, check out www.64galaxie. com - they are located in Arizona and are parting out 1959 thu 1971 Galaxies. They might be able to help you.

OK, found a bumper place in Los Angeles called The Bumper Boys.
They actually had a NOS metal unchromed one also.
About 1/2 of the others.

Bad and good. There are bad and good from all these plating shops. Even one that was $1200 to 1500 for a bumper had bad reviews, others at 850 had bad reviews. The prices ranged ALL OVER THE PLACE! These guys had as many bad and good reviews as those that were way up there in price. Funny how the price is ALL over the place and the bad mouthing is as bad everywhere also. There are no local shops, these have been priced out of operation by the EPA. The place that most recommended here in Ogden, UT had more bad reviews than the ones in LA.
We'll see, it's $450 with my core, $550 without it. Sent the core yesterday and it should be in LA by tomorrow. I should have it back in a few weeks.
So pricing for a 70 Galaxie rear bumper, because of the size I guess, ranged from $450 and upwards of $1,500. All shops said they do triple chrome also.
If it comes back good, I'm thinking of doing my air cleaner :)

Dianne, my son has a 1953 Chrysler Town & Country Wagon that needed some bumper work.
Bumper Boys had one in stock and it was a very good piece of work.

Thanks Srt, they seem to be OK from what I read. They are inexpensive and do tripe plating. I'll let everyone know how it did.

I sent my core, but they are using a NOS bumper that hasn't been plated. I've read good and bad on these guys. I've read good and bad on everyone I called, including the ones at $1,500 or more! So I guess it's a crap shoot. Not like chroming places are all over the place anymore with the EPA regs...
