Leaky transmission
« on: July 27, 2017, 07:05:56 AM »
Hey guys,

Got a major issue. Well, major in my eyes.

Last night I got home and saw the garage floor covered in fluid. Transmission leaked everywhere.  The car is a 1980 Ford Pinto Runabout..... Anyway, I replaced the transmission pan gasket since it had leaked before due to an old, cracked gasket, and also replaced the tail shaft seal since it was old. The transmission is a C4 automatic. I've been told they did not come with a C4 in 1980, but according to the door tag it is a C4 from the factory.

Anyway it isn't leaking from the rear of the car, but from the front of the pan. I've ordered a Fel-Pro gasket for the car and will be replacing that tonight. Any suggestions what else it may be?

Check the hose/tubing that goes to the front. Also the vacuum module.

Leak is fixed. I installed a new dipstick o-ring, and when I removed the pan found a 4 inch long strip of old gasket. I don't know how I missed it but it caused the massive leak. I was able to save the transmission fluid since it was not old, and put it in a brand new drain pan, then poured it back in the transmission. Only lost about a quart but it looked like a lot more. So far so good.

It makes you feel good when you solve a problem, especially if it doesn't drain the bank account! Pat yourself on the back and say, "Mission accomplished!"

You got that right. $1 in cat litter, $1 in a new drain pan so no contamination, $.29 for a new dipstick seal, and 3 quarts of type F at $5.69 a quart. Bought three but used one, so technically only $5.69. I bought the new gasket but since I don't need it I will return it.

Just think. After the tranie oil leak, you need not worry about rust under the car for a while.

Except it only leaked when the car was off and not running. It happened while the car was jacked up on four jack stands lol

A leak a day will keep the rust away or so they say.
