key release

I have never seen a key release on any other car except ours. Does anyone know it's purpose?

I have seen it in other cars
I would say it is to prevent ignition from shutting off car
During driving from vibration
This has caused accidents and deaths.
Loss of power steering  and brakes

If your talking the button you have to push in to get the key to go to the lock position it is used with floor shift transmissions. Lots of vehicles used them. With a column shift there is an interlock that prevents going to lock until transmission is in park.

My 73 wagon 4 speed has one.

It may be to insure that the steering wheel lock does not accidentally engage while drivjng and or to insure that it does when the vehicle is parked as a theft prevention measure.

It is possible to turn off the ignition without removing the key, just not possible to engage sterring lock without deliberately pressing button and turning switch to LOCK position.
