Is this an oil leak or brake line leak or neither?
« on: August 06, 2013, 11:27:37 PM »
I noticed a spot of oil in my garage and it was coming from the back right part of the car. It looked like maybe oil, but i didn't think oil could leak back there. I had thought maybe it was brake fluid, but I checked the reservoir and it seemed full. I tried to take some pictures, so if anyone could help I would appreciate. And if it helps with diagnosing, when I slow down to a stop, right before I stop the car and steering wheel shakes. It's not too bad, but it's pretty noticeable.

Could be an axle seal leaking gear lube.

Oh ok. Well it hasn't done it anymore since yesterday? It's still ok to drive and everything though, right?

As long as you aren't running it too low it should be fine. I'd take out the fill plug & stick a pinky in to see if your good to go or need to add any lube.

Yeah, a 3/8" ratchet fits the square hole to take the plug out. Your pinky should touch fluid just below the hole but even a 1/2" low is OK temporarily. Any lower & I'd add till it dribbles out the hole.

Ok I got it open and stick my pinky in and there wasn't much in there if any. I went up to the auto store and fill it up and it used a good bit. Thanks for the help!

Glad to be of help. Just be prepared to see that leak pop back up since now you have enough to leak again. The axle gaskets are cheap & changing them isn't very hard as long as you can get a slide hammer to pop the axles out.
