INFO . Please on V-6 pintos
« on: January 25, 2015, 08:31:59 AM »
As a new member , I'm still trying to find just the right project car. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated .
Question : Did they make a v-6 / 4 speed runabout ? Or was that combo only in the wagon ?
Question #2 : Is it true that the v-6 only came in yrs. 1975-79 ?
Question #3 : Is the 2.8 L worth investing in to get 300 HP ?
I'm looking to shout out my Mustang Friends with a killer street car , BUT ONE THAT HAS VERY GOOD HANDELING .
The v-8 - 4 speed combo . seems to have too many handling issues , that would make it too pricey to correct. So plan "B" , a killer v-6. Sorry guys , with all due respect . I'm just not a 4 banger / auto. type of guy.

The 4 cylinder 5 speed is the only real way to go if you are looking for handling. The V6 is just not performance oriented. I'm not sure you could even find many (if any) performance parts for this old 2.8, not to mention it has solid lifters so you have to adjust the valves every few thousand miles. The 2.3 4 cylinder is available turbocharged and since it is very common in racing, there are TONS of performance parts available for it. 300 hp is doable without a turbo on the 2.3. There is one pinto i remember running an insane 1/4 mile time with a non-turbo 2.3. It was something like 8 or 10 seconds, and THEN they turbocharged it. I don't know what ever happened with that car, I haven't seen anything about it in a long time.... It had a front license plate that said "Boss 2300" on it... someone else around here might know more about it.

As for your questions -1 I don't know for sure if a V6 was available with a 4 speed or not, but i think they were automatic only. 2- Yes the V6 pinto was only 75 to 79. 1980 had only  the 2.3L option. -3. In my opinion, no the 2.8 isn't worth messing with. If it were my car I would yank out the 2.8 and replace it with a 2.3. The only other thing I might consider is one of those new Chevy 4.3 EcoTec V6's. They are 300hp right out of the factory...my Volvo has a 97 4.3 in it now and I am thinking about putting one of those EcoTec 4.3s in it as well....

Agree with the V6 not being suited for performance.

A straight 6 Ford would be great, but they just won't fit in our cars-too long.

The 4 banger with a manual really is a good choice, lots and lots of stuff for it. And then you can really poke fun at the Mustang guys about getting beat by a 4 cylinder.  8) And they are as plentiful as small block Fords. Tons of cars to get one from.

The V8 can be made weight friendly with aluminum heads and parts, but that is pricey. Although the 302 isn't much more weight than a turbo'd 2.3 as it is. But it is more work to get it in the car and not everyone's idea of fun.

Me, I am going with a 351C as I love those engines and mine is now going to be just a weekend fun car.

Well here is the info , yes you are right on the years, 75 to late 79, and no, the pinto only came with the auto with the V-6,  the reason was they did not want the pinto to be quicker than the mustang two with the 302,  yes you can install one , the four speed was a T-4 , father to the later T-5 , and yes if you have the bell housing you can bolt in a T-5, MY guess is that you already have a Pinto with the 2.8, so we will go from there , I have a few of the same, and a few ways to ramp up the power , mine is the stock block 2.8 , with a crank out of a 2.9, and yes you can drop a 4.0 crank into it out of a ranger, or better drop a 4.0 in it, the pinto motor mount will bolt to the engine and will also bolt to the transmission also, only you have to mod the 2.8 pan to fit, or if you have the time try to find a 2.9 24V BOB engine , same block as the 2.8/2.9 and has four valves per cylinder , and stock is 205 hp , gobs of low end tourqe, knowing what I know now I would have just used the 2.9 or 4.0 but still I wanted the car to look stock, and still have good mpg, so my car has a 3.8 TBI with the 2.9 computor , mild comp cam , little head work , headers , bored 40 over and stroked to 3.0, and A4LD overdrive, I can not jump on the gas to hard or the tires go up in smoke, needs a posa unit now , my 79 2.8 wagon I still have not made up my mind to put in it, 4.0 or diesel engine with T-5, hope this helps, but if you have a 2.3 it is better to go with the Turbo 2.3, good luck  8)

hi,  my little 2.8 freshly redone pushes my little car nicely,  however not looking to even try and kill mustangs with.  but building a 302  83 ranger for that.  the truck had a 2.8 with 5 speed,  now i have been thinking for a while about re-gearing the trans and putting this behind the 2.8 that is in the car.  will take a bit of reconstruction, only reason it is still only a thought.

i used to own the offy 4 barrel intake and a set of 2.8 aerostar headers at one time  to build a racer 2.8. sold it all before i got that far.  was interested in how far i could push a 2.8.

cheers

If it had a 2.8 V-6 why not put in a EFI 4.0 V-6 from a Ford Explorer and than have fun......After all the 4.0 X vin engine is the direct descendant of the V-6 2.8 correct....All you need is a Merkur Scorpio 5 Speed and a used Ford Explorer engine or find the 5 speed  Ford Explorer and you are all set.

the explorer trans will not work, one it has a hydraulic clutch , along with the merkur scorpio, but the 2.9 engine will do nicely , the intake has a low profile , higher compression and better ecm , the T-5 one the merkur has a odd trans mount, (got one ) easy to use the 2.8 mustang two bellhousing and put a T-5 on it from a T- bird , D L Ball is correct on the descendants of the v-6,  all take the same rod bearings, main bearings (except thrust on 2.8 and 2.6) and front and rear seals , all years , the pinto engine mounts will bolt on the 4.0 until 1999 , they changed , along with more flywheel bolts, (not the stock six) , 2.8 parts are getting hard to find unless you live in England or Germany , the 4.0 would be the best, good and very reliable , got one in my 93 ranger that I brought new, now have over 250K of hard use, trailer towing and never had the valve covers off, plus you can still find some HP parts for them , (for now ) later Blaine
