Ignition Switch Wiring Diagram / Start & Run Circuits?
« on: March 26, 2019, 07:02:17 PM »
Hi

In regards to this thread:

https://www.fordpinto.com/index.php?topic=29270.0

After the car firing right up and running like a dream two days ago - then suddenly dying after 5 or 6 minutes, I appear to now be having a no-spark issue.  I would like to start at the ignition switch and work my way through the start and run circuits to try to isolate the issue(s) to try to figure out why the car won't start.

My Chilton's manual does not have any wiring diagrams.  Of course, I checked Google and couldn't find anything there either.

Can anyone please post a link or a picture of the wiring schematic for late 70's / early 80's Pinto ignition switches and if possible, info or links to the start and run circuits?  I can't find any details of the 'black-magic' of the electronics on our cars.

Thank you in advance for any help or direction you can give me,

Dave

I often find when looking for wiring diagrams that searching Google Images is helpful. That said, I looked briefly and didn't find much. Perhaps a more throughout search would yield better results.

My Clymer's manual has wiring diagrams to the late 70's but they are so small even a magnifying glass is barely helpful. My Haynes manual only goes to 1974. Perhaps that was the year it was sold and subsequent years go further. Perhaps you can find a Clymer's on Ebay (and a good magnifying glass).

I took a quick look. Here is one of many. Under $10 with free shipping.   https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Clymer-Ford-Pinto-Mercury-Bobcat-1971-1980-Shop-Repair-Manual/303071881254?hash=item46907de826:g:boYAAOSw-JtccDsw&frcectupt=true

Not sure if this will help but heres a link to wiring diagrams for many ford products from 1973.

There are color charts and the pinto section starts at about page 15 or 16

73WireDiagramM anual_web.pdf

It works for my 73 maybe it can provide you with some help..

Also..if you do a google search there are a lot of places to buy a full schematic of the wiring.. most are about $20

Might ba a good investment if you are going to keep the car

Thank you but that link doesn't work for me.  Could you please try to post it again?

Not sure why it doesn't work for you. I just tried it (the link above, post #2) and it took me to the site. I'll try posting it on a separate line. Otherwise just search on Ebay   Clymers Pinto  .

Update: I tested this too (after I posted it) and it works.

What year are you looking for?
I just typed in  1979 Pinto wiring diagram  in a search engine, and among others found this.

For a 1980, check this link out.
About everything you could ever want for literature.
Scroll down and there is a 1980 Pinto wiring diagram.
There is also an electrical troubleshootin g guide.

Yes, it will cost a little bit, but I have one of the factory wiring diagrams for the 74 from him. Worth every penny.
