Idle stop solenoid for 2.3 holley 5200 v2 w/ac
« on: September 17, 2014, 01:02:07 PM »
Okay all you gurus, I'm looking for a part number for the Idle stop solenoid for a 78 Bobcat wagon with the 2.3L  and the Holley 5200 v2 carb (D8EE  KA) - the motor DOES have working A/C (yay!) - also any tips, clues as to how to initially set up the solenoid and idle speed. The solenoid that is on the carb now appears to be working backwards - initially it seemed to work correctly, the idle increased when the a/c was turned on, but then I had done some adjustments to the idle speed and mixture and now its working in reverse - the idle speed drops when the a/c is turned on... oh yeah, before it started working backwards I was checking things on the carb when I first started tweaking it and I pushed in on the plunger and I felt a snap, which I why I think a new one is in order...

Uh, pretty sure the idle speed did not kick UP with a/c on those, too early. The solenoids supplied on those cars would be a type that the upper hold was for normal idle and they only can DROP idle, not increase it. They increase to the upper step ONLY when the throttle is hit to unload them, they cannot push hard enough to jack speed up by themselves and not intended to. The lower rpm step when power cut allows the throttle to close fully to stop afterrunning or dieseling, all they were intended to do. I have '80 model 2.3 and all it had on it as well.

They became throttle 'kickers' when they started being incorporated with a vacuum cylinder, that was the first throttle kicker Ford used that could bump throttle up by itself without relieving the throttle by hitting it. Around early to mid' '80s or so when lots of engines began to show up with them. That type will have a vacuum port on it.

My '80 service manual shows them but mine didn't have the vacuum, only the electrical solenoid. The vacuum part kicks up rpm for a/c, the electrical ON on solenoid sets idle and the OFF on solenoid lets throttle drop to zero for anti-dieseling.

I wouldn't, all you need there is power to work the solenoid. Usually bad solenoid if anything, they get weak and won't hold the idle setting. They even when new will not bump the throttle UP, they only snap up when you press throttle doing anything and then do not go back down until powered off. Need a good ground off the carb of course.

The vac portion works on dead stock engine but any engine mods can make that part no longer work right. Lower vacuum from older engine won't even work right. A real sucky method of boosting idle there, they didn't use them very long in practice. Myself I'd defeat it and manually bump up idle to be able to cover both speeds on and off. Or use an all electric solenoid.
