identifying sw gas tanks
« on: February 01, 2014, 03:05:53 AM »
is there a way to id what year fuel tank I have. acquired a 78 bobcat wagon, fuel tank in back, sending unit removed. sender is 78 but tangs don't align. located supplier with new senders for all years but all different tang positions and price ranging from 70 to 185 bucks, hence my dilemma. is there a part # stamped anywhere? looking at opening my tang positions are 10 and 2o'clock. any help?  thanks

You must make sure the configuration and bend and plug-in of the part match what needs to be there, much more important than any 'tangs'. Also, I haven't been there in a while but looking online shows no tangs on the part at all, rather a round disk that has a ring over the top. Regardless, tangs are easily modified if you cannot find correct part. The sending unit must use correct volts as well, it is a resistor that matches to the gauge so more room for error than you think. The tangs are not the major issue there although they may indicate where you should go.

For $75+ bucks I'd be looking to just modify the sending unit resistor and nothing else. I've done it on other cars for $10 before. The actual resistor costs maybe $2 there......... .........and the rest is simply a pipe with a filter on the end.

I believe all the tanks are the same but the sending units do vary! I know for sure a 73 wagon sending unit will not work in  a78 bobcat, had bought a 73 pinto tank  with sender, planned on getting my gas gauge to work. only to find out the 73 pinto sender has a return line , a 78 bobcat does not!!

but back to your question both senders fit in the same gas tank!! hope this helps!!

I agree and forgot about the return line but it exists on those that call for it. I make the smaller one disappear, not absolutely necessary to have it.
