how do i know if the exploding problem has been fixed on my pinto? :o

Look for a plastic shield on the back of the fuel tank. A chrome gas cap used to mean the recall was done but that's not reliable after all these years.

And by "on the back" he means as if you are looking from the rear of the car - forward, then it would seem to be on the back of the tank (from that perspective). Looking from the front perspective of the car, it is on the front the tank. Better said, it is between the rear end and the gas tank, but strapped to the tank.
And, jeez, I can't find a single adequate picture (Google images) to send him to. What is up with that???

crikey,, its a plastic shield installed against the gas tank front face between it and the back of the rear axle,
-
Yep, my 79 has it, right where the sending unit and fueline is :D

If you can find the later rounded rear end cover the same thing as having that plastic shield. The early covers had points on the corners that punctured the tank on impact. Both are even better.

Yeah, front of the tank. My perspective is assbackwards. Should have said between the tank & axle LOL
