Title: How much paint is needed?
Post by: BaneOfOden on December 04, 2016, 03:07:50 AM: So I've got a 75 runabout that could use some paint! I was wondering how much paint you guys think I should buy whether I paint it myself or have a shop do it. It's worth noting it has a vinyl top.

Are you staying with the same color or making a change? Stripping to bare metal, or just scuffing and respraying? Do you know anything about painting a car? Do you have the right tools and a suitable place to work? There are a LOT of variables!

Post by: BaneOfOden on December 04, 2016, 11:47:27 AM: I was going to strip it to bare metal and repaint it the same color. I'm not going to pretend I know anything about paint so I plan on taking it to a shop. My question was ignoring primer and a clearcoat how much should I buy?

Post by: dga57 on December 04, 2016, 07:34:31 PM: If you're planning to take the car to a shop to have it painted, the paint will be figured into the cost of the job - I can't imagine any shop allowing you to provide product while they provide only labor. For a car the size of a Pinto, with a vinyl top, and with no color change, I think a half gallon would be more than sufficient.

Post by: Wittsend on December 05, 2016, 01:09:57 PM: My experience from having painted two Datsun 510's with lacquer (late 70's) is it took a minimal of four quarts. I bought it that way in case I could return a full quart, but I don't recall ever doing so. I'd think that buying by the gallon would be more economical? I'd think there is a general coverage rate for any specific paints and a tape measure will tell you the surface area to be painted on your Pinto. As Dwayne already stated though there are significant variables. You might want to try seeing what the Duplicolor (know Pep Boys carries it)" paint it yourself" information provides. That should give you a ballpark idea of the amount needed.

Post by: dga57 on December 05, 2016, 07:04:35 PM: I painted my F-150 pickup in a Victoria two-tone regatta blue/white with acrylic enamel and used a half gallon each color... and had some of both colors left over. I've never used lacquer but I know it takes more coats of that to get a good job than it does with acrylic enamel.
