How much oil 78 2,8L V6 Merc. Bobcat
« on: August 04, 2013, 04:46:36 PM »
Hi!

A few weeks ago Is purchased a 1978 Mercury Bobcat. What started as a simple valve clearing adjustment(I'm Dutch so my technical English can be a bit rusty) resulted in a complete overhaul.
Someone swapped the original engine with a Mustang II engine and transmission. So the new original bobcat engine didn't fit.... found the original transmission and made the whole thing work. New valves, valvestem seals, waterpump, etc etc...

But now I'm left with one problem. the oildipstick is located at the steeringwheel/backside of the engine, next to cil. 6. The dipstick is in the shallow part of the oilpan. It's probably not a correct dipstick. I put around 5,5L oil in the engine, but stil no oil on the dipstick.
The Ford shopmanual Vol. 5 says only something about filling till level on the dipstick indicates "Save". I think I should have reached this point at 5 quarters(about 4,9L)......

So, how much oil does my Meercury Bobcat need.

Kind Regards,

Bas

The Netherlands.

Hi and thanks for the quick response.

Anyone any ideas why there is no oil at my dipstick then?

The dip stick could be the wrong one for the engine possibly

I tried the dipstick before rebuilding the engine. It touches the bottom of the shallow end.
It's pretty hard to get the dipstick down it's tube.

But there is not a single drop of oil at the end of the stick...
Maybe it gets scraped off by the tube?

Hmm that's quite odd then. I guess anything is possible although I haven't heard of that happening before. If you added the oil that it required then you should be ok I would think

Hi,  you can try this....

Get a metal coat hanger, (or thin strong metal) slide it into the tube till it hits bottom of oil pan.  pull it out and compare the two for length. the real dip stick and the metal wire.  this should give you a close idea what is going on.  you might have the wrong dip stick to start with.  this will also show how much oil is sitting in the pan.

hope this might help.

I just read again what you posted,  your sump is at the front and the dipstick is at the back?   how did you test it before you put it all together? and how can you swap the front to back sump areas?  can you post a pic of the motor and oil pan?  and last thing is it possible to place the dip stick into the proper place at cyl. #4?

Hi,

The oilpump is at the shallow part with a large pickup thing to the front end. (no pics of that but i guess that's normal)

I tested by sticking in thee dipstick without the oilpan. I can hear the dipstick hitting the bottom of the pan, it's a bit too long at one end:P So yes it probably is the wrong one but it should show some oil right?

Nice pics, those actually shed some light on the situation. When the engine is sitting the oil is in the deep part. That is  why the dipstick is bottoming out & the oil is not reading any oil. The oil sits where the oil pump pick up is so when the engine starts it sucks it up. That would be why you're not reading the oil even though you put in the correct amount. You need to relocate it to the front where it's plugged up and that should help with no reading of oil on the dipstick, as well as it hitting the bottom of the pan.

from seeing the situation i would say no.  I don't think you would see any oil on the dipstick because 5 Liters wouldn't over flow the sump and flow over the high end of the pan.  if you know you placed in 5,  and have no leaks you should be fine.  i would try and see about ways to change the dipstick back to the proper spot though...  must be eerie feeling not knowing 100% what is going on.

So, my dipstick is at the wrong end....
How is that even possible? And how can I open the correct hole without having to dismantle the whole engine.

It depends. if the engine was used in another car where the pickup would be at the back of the engine the dipstick would be as well to read the oil in the deep part of the pan. I'm not too sure about removing the plug but if you are able to carefully remove it you might be able to use it in the other hole. If you do that you will want to make sure it's in snugly so it doesn't come out & leak out all your oil.
