How do I adjust a water choke?
« on: July 14, 2013, 07:33:19 PM »
I picked up an NOS carb for my '76 wagon & finally installed it.

My stock carbs water choke had parallel inlets but this one is angled. Other than that & a bowl vent the carb is identical. To hook up the water lines I had to twist the housing counter clockwise to avoid interference issues.

The car runs beautifully but I have no choke. Did I throw it out of adjustment by turning it like I think I did? If that's the problem can I swap on the old water housing in it's place? Can I just eliminate the water choke & rely solely on the electric half or are they designed to work together?

I also need to know the setting for the enrichment screw. I turned it in until it bobbled then backed it out until it smoothed out then 1/4 turn more. It smells a bit rich there. That setting is pretty much right where it was set out of the box anyhow.

Did you see the marks on top of the choke and the plate in between the housing ? The plastic piece has marks and the side that is closer to the carb has marks. Align them accordingly. Any good manual will go into allot more detail on how to set one up. Is the element wired into the alternator ? Do you have voltage going to the element ?

Make sure you have voltage to the element, mine works like any other electric choke and I don't have water running through it right now, I sure don't understand the water part???..

If you're talking about the air/fuel mixture screw, you can do it two ways by vacuum or rpm, turn the screw in(lean)to where it runs rough then back it out to the highest vacuum reading or the highest rpm, if you back it off more it'll idle rich.

I saw the marks but they moved when I spun the water housing. You mean that piece isn't part of the water housing? It looked like it was all cast together.

The water housing is held on by the center bolt only, the choke is held with the three screws forward of the water housing.

Nope it's many pieces not just one. Loosen the center bolt and rotate the housing until they line up.  You should have a set on the outer part and one the plastic center part.Try to have them line up in the middle and see what that gets you.

Very interesting learn something new every day, mine must be different then, of course it was suggested that I had a later carb since the filter screwed into the carb?, but as you can see the water housing has nothing to do with the choke adjustment it's separate, the center bolt just bolts to the element housing and rotates to suit hose alignment, also there's no markings on the housing either?, the marks are only on the choke housing and the element housing and the three screws need to be loosened then adjust the choke in the conventional way at least that's the way it works on mine anyways, I adjusted it to my climate and fired it up and let it run and it opened up normal just like any other electric choke that's been around for 35+ years.. But as I mentioned before I've never messed with these carbs before so I may be missing something in all this????..

OK, I think I got the choke set. I took the water housing off & turned the choke cover 2 notches to the right of center. It was 2 to the left out of the box. Now the butterflies close & high idle kicks in like it should. I checked it & I also have 12 volts to the electric side.

Now I need cool weather to see how it acts since it was 80 already this morning & I may need to back it off slightly. I also installed the stock water outlet. The hoses are out of the way with that one & route better. I couldn't find my vacuum gauge so I'll have to set it later.

I also now have a slight miss at idle after changing out the junk cap/rotor for a used one I had until I could order a good brass one. I also tossed on what looked like a fairly new set of Bosch wires & they may be the issue. I'll address that when I have a new cap & rotor to install.

Great, thanks for the update. Hell I got rid of my water set up and put in a 1977 electrical choke a while back. It's not hard to do.

I was looking for a good deal on an electric choke version for several months when this NOS, not rebuilt popped up on ebay for $100 shipped. I couldn't pass it up for that price so I'm still using the water heated one. My old one worked  great but the mileage was killing me.
