Title: Holley 6299/ Offy Manifold - 2.3 starts on prime only, won't stay running
Post by: hydrodriver on April 28, 2012, 01:34:15 PM
Put a Holley 6299 and Offy manifold on our '79 2.3.  Running electric pump at 7 psi.  Engine will start when carb is primed down venturi(s), but will run away up to 4000 RPM and then quit - no fuel.
Need ideas please.
Bernie

Way too much fuel pressure! Pintos never need more than 4psi of fuel. If your getting fuel to the carb, then remove the float bowl, turn it upside down and look at the float. Should be level when upside down. Thats always a good starting point to later set the floats with the screw on top on the float bowl.

Thanks dick1172762 (http://www.fordpinto.com/profile/?u=387).
Yes, I have set the floats with the bowl off - upside down and parallel to the floor of the bowl chamber. After the last start try I opened the sight screws and did get a trickle of fuel, primary bowl was full.   I do have a regulator I can install to drop the fuel pressure.
Do the primary shutters need to be cracked - seems to me I read something about that to start the fuel draw at idle -

Do you have the correct gasket between the metering block & carb body? There are 2 different types of gaskets behind the power valve as well. Having the wrong gasket will block fuel flow through the passages.

A Holley can handle 7 PSI fuel pressure but I'd dial it back to 5.

Thanks to all for suggestions - found the problem.  The Offy manifold has a gasket between the lower casting and the carb adapter plate.  When I took it apart and cleaned it last winter, some dummy forgot to put the gasket back in - huge air leak.
Also had to go to a -4 secondary diaphragm to close the secondaries. Holly calls for a -2 but that would not allow the secondaries to fully close.
It runs so sweet - 'way smoother than the 2 barrel stock setup.  Have yet to crack the 4 barrel open, only doing garage tuning at the moment.
Engine summary:
1979 2.3, bored .040, decked to clean up, .050 milled head, solid lifters, double valve springs (90 pounders), Racer Walsh Stage One cam, Racer adjustable cam pulley, Offenhauser dual plane intake, Holley 6299-1 390 cfm four barrel, Hooker exhaust header, Arp rod bolts and flywheel bolts.

Hydro, be sure to keep us posted on how it runs out. I have a 6299 and intake for a 2.3 in the garage. Waiting to find something to put it in.

Glad you got it figured out, usually
something simple(right).
I have one of those Offy intakes also.
Probably sell it as I REALLY like the FI
lowers with the adapter on them.
