Holley 5200 with modified engine or weber 38/38
« on: October 24, 2012, 05:05:45 PM »
My 2.3L has mild cam, headers upgraded ignition etc..

Thinking of buying a referbished 5200 holley for this car but it being progressive would it preform right?

or I could buy a 38/38 weber or?

Looking to make the right purchase as I do not want to play with the jeting, PV etc...

Would a weber 38/38 fit a stock intake manifold on a 2.3L pinto?

Hi,  Lets get technical.

How many RPM's will be your top?  At what elevation are you going to be driving mainly?  Expected CFM?  You running a water for choke carb?

How many C.I.D's is your engine? Expected HP? Rear end ratio? transmission? Mild cam... Valve durations?

What type of octane?   What are you trying to achieve?  1/4 mile screamer or daily driver?

Or are you looking for someone to say good or bad things about one or the other carb?  And what is a progressive carb?

Have you considered a motorcraft 2150?

And what is the biggest mistake people make about carburation?

cheers

Top rpms would be 4500

Going with an electric choke

390 cfm and under

140 4 inline, expected hp 88-120hp

I have a T-5 tranny from a turbo coupe and an 8" mustang foxbody rear end

I have not put the cam in I'm quessing its a 0.50 longer duration

98 octane and I want it as a daily driver with some kick

A progressive carb is a small 2V carb with a secondaries throttle like a 4V carb

I do have a 2150 motorcraft but it runs rich with it on,I have to plug the PV valve to get it running right and I think the jetting is wrong.

Hi,  from the answers I don't know what to say to help you.  On a different thread i said to find the best carb that was responsive and jet to the performance you were needing. I wasn't aware that the cam wasn't already installed, and I am having problems with why you will be running 98 octane for you didn't explain what compression ratio you are running to need that.  You also need to possibly rejet to your altitude, for yes it can make a difference in high performance modifications.

I don't know if there would be a right or wrong choice here. I feel what is right or wrong could be how you want the carb to be set up for the mods you are going to be making to the motor- IE - you get a nicely responsive carb that fits good with no vacuum leaks however, there is a tiny more uhmmph that you feel it needs. you will need to fine tune the settings and then if this doesn't do it, you might need to consider tuning the jets one size up or down. all carbs need to be setup to run good. Even brand new out of the box 600 holleys need to be fine tuned or rejetted to make them get the proper A/F ratios. (A/F air fuel)

hope this helps somewhat.

cheers
