Title: Hole in side of block

Hello all. While I had the intake manifold off of my 1971 1.6 tonight, I noticed a small hole in the side of my block, below the PCV box. Oil has been spraying onto my firewall since I got the car a little over 2 years ago, and I'm thinking this is where it's coming from. My question is, what the heck is this hole for???

Almost looks like a dipstick tube hole.......... ..........

That's what I thought at first, but the dipstick is on the front of the motor. It doesn't have any threading, so nothing was bolted there. Anytime it runs over 3k it sprays oil onto the firewall and hood, and when parked with the engine off it leaks on the concrete.

In that case just put  press fit plug in there. Maybe it's for a dipstick for a different pan and a plug got left out at one time.

Pretty sure it is an alternate postion hole for a dipstick. In the late 70's I was working in engineering at OMC maufacturing in Owatonna, MN desigining Mustang skid steer loaders. We used an industrial version of the Ford 1.6L engine in one of the models and there were many options available to allow it to be used in different machines. Just get a small frost plug and some form-a-gasket and seal it up.

Thanks for the help. Would it be safe to thread it and put a short bolt in there to plug it?

If you tap it you'll send all the chips into the pan, put a press plug in works just as good.
