Help keeping it running
« on: September 09, 2012, 09:31:24 PM »
I'm building a kit car with 76 Pinto engine, 2.3 fitted to a t5 out of a turbo t-bird.  The engine is pretty much bone stock as far as I know.  I got it from a guy, who got it from a guy...

The carb is a 5200 with water choke.

It's to the point of dropping the body onto the rolling chassis, except:

Yesterday I got the engine running continuously, for the first time, and surprised myself to no end.

but there are issues:
where does the electrical lead out of the choke connect?
where does the electrical lead out at the throttle stop connect?
there's a fitting at the top which is plugged with a vacuum line cap - I have no idea what's supposed to be there, but I'm pretty sure
it's not supposed to be capped off.  any help?

The engine starts with no trouble, but will not continue to run, unless the air supply is nearly choked off.

I can keep it running only by pumping the accelerator, by shooting starting into the primary, or by manually closing the butterfly while working the throttle

suggestions?

ok I might be off on these but heres my thoughts.

The electrical connection for the choke comes off the distributor. Mines off and I see the wire I need to get a picture of it and make sure its right.

The wire by the throttle stop sounds like it might go to a solenoid for altering the idle (ac cars maybe?) mine doesnt that on it, 1978.

The hose on the top youre talking about is it facing toward the radiator on that edge? If it is theres a pretty good size (larger than most of mine) vacuum hose that connects to the carb there.Im not sure what it goes to but I do know if its off it wont run well. I pulled mine off without realizing before and finally found it off and that seems to be pretty important. I`ll try to figure out what it goes to if I can find my haynes or chilton book, or when its light outside. If someone doesnt come and answer first :)

The wire for the choke actually goes to the alternator. Had to replace mine on my 77 Pinto since it was broken & that was where it was at. I can try to get a pic later on when I am off work.

I've discovered from other boards, that the lead for a "normal" electric choke, comes from a 12v switched source.  Is this also true for the water choke?

For the water choke it is heated up with the hoses that go to the choke. The hoses are connected to the cooling system & as the coolant warms up the choke functions as if an electric choke would with the electric coil.

The water choke on my wagon works perfectly. The 36 year old carb could use a rebuild but I'm gonna keep this set up.

rvpinto - thanks for the reply.  I got the water flow part figured out OK, but there's also a wire coming out of the back which confuses me.  where does that wire connect,  to 12v positive switched power?

cool. thanks y'all.  BTW, I posted an ebook I found on line in the general help section.  There's a link listed in my post, in case for some reason the server loses the PDF file.  Good stuff in there, lot's of pictures and easy to read explanations, including how to do a complete rebuild.

My valve cover has the sticker for a 76.  It appears that my 76 manifold may have a 74 carb on it.  Early on the book says that  in addition to the water choke, "some 74 models had an electric assist" function.  My carb has the assist, ergo, it must be a 74 model 5200.  Opinions?

Frankly I'd be surprised if there was much that was OEM on this engine, cuz I bought it from a guy who did a lot of racing around the west for many years. His shop yard is full of old cars and projects.
anyhow thanks for the help guys, and lemme know what ya think about the electric assist thing - 74? yes or no?

My '76 has the electric hookup as well. It picks up a 12V hot from the alternator.

pulled the carb off today and was able to get a good look at it from every angle for the first time.  I think it wouldn't run well, partially at least, because the butterfly valve's post on the little bellcrank had purposely NOT been placed in the spring loop, so as to disable the choke completely. I'm gonna take the unit to a pro carb shop nearby, and have it gone through anyhow.

Nice to know Pinto 5, that your 76 has the electrical hookup on the water choke like mine.  I'm more comfortable knowing that my carb is OEM with my engine, or at least it appears that way.

thanks for the great responses all y'all.  Good stuff.

took the carb to a fine local shop - nice lady at the counter pulled out her magnifying glass, to read the stamping on the side, and locate my carb in her big book of carbs.  Yes, my carb is indeed OEM for 1976, so that other booklet I posted early is misleading about the elec assist appearing on some 74's.  apparently some of the 76's have them too.

My 1976 had the same choke set up.
