Does anyone know where to find heater control cables for a '71? The plastic ends of mine are both broken.
I wonder if choke cables could be made to work?

Yep... plastic ends and the outside in not coated all the way, you are right.
I measured the pinto cables. Length, (72 w/heater only) and they are 16.5" from end of plastic caps to end and 2" travel with the other 21" with the same 2" travel. I ordered the 18" and the 24" (closest they had listed) with their clamps and retainers. Looks like this 'may' work using 2 of the clamps facing each other duplicating the 'dual' molded end... we'll see...

Fozzy, I remade mine with choke cables and welded a tab up to mount onto the dash control. It works better than oem in my opinion.

We'll... the cables came in and they look great. Had to drill one hole in the dash control frame to install the keepers so they would align... now to put the into the car. Whee... First image was 'Before'

Still have that new windshield cowl ? Someplace a guy was asking on here for one.
No idea why, as they are galvanized & shouldn't rust. Much.
Had some (light) on mine where it welds to the box though.

Hey Man! Yup... still have it ... my 72 looked like it was heavily rusted when I got her 15 years ago, she spent 2 years at the body shop- full to metal restore/ repaint... bought it thinking we would need to replace it but the shop, after inspection, said it was repairable and I ended up not needing it...
The cables installed great and I'm now driving her and everything works great and much easier. I used the stock keepers and screws on the mount points on the heater box with full motion. Been driving her solid with no issues. Last month I changed the thermostat from the 160 I had in to the stock 192 where I noticed (because my cables were broken) my feet were always very hot from the heater. Thought about installing a 4 way manual water bypass from a Ford Aerostar but because I was putting in electronic gages, replacing the mechanical, I opted to go ahead and try and fix the cables.
I'm happy...
