Title: Heater control cables for a ‘71?
Post by: fozzy on June 26, 2019, 03:23:27 AM
What do you all use for heater control cables?

I’ve got a couple old ones but the plastic ends are broken, they might work with heat shrink tubing to re-enforce them.
I was debating using manual choke cables cut to length. My dash is custom also so factory cables may not work anyway.

Does anyone have pics of how the cables are attached to the switch/control panel?

Hi..

The plastic ends of my heate control cables were broken as well and i repaired them.by wrapping about 1/2 " of .030 steel utility wire around the cable housing, leaving a couple of inches wire free to secure the cable to the anchor points on the control.and heater. Then i glued the wire wrapping to the cable housing to secure it. Just be careful to lube the wire inside rhe xable and avoid gett8ng glue into the cable. If you wind the wire wrap tight enough around the housing and maybe wrap for an inch or so you may not need to glue it.

Then just wrap the cree ends of wire wrap around the anchor points on the controls to secure the cable.

I am adding a water bypass valve to my heater system under the hood and will be using a standard choke cable connected to the heat lever to actuate it.

There was a NOS one on eBay a while ago, it still might be there.

I remade mine with 2 universal choke cables.  Made a steel bracket and welded it unto cables.

I rebuilt the cables from parts you can get here...

I just repaired my cable and this process worked for me. As stated earlier the ends are just wire wound around the post. Mine broke at the heater box end, the smaller diameter plastic sleeve broke off. I did glue and heat shrink the end which made for strong end but instead of securing using the repaired smaller diameter plastic end I used a "P" clamp/cushion clamp commonly used in aircraft wiring.  I set aside the original retaining clip and secured the cable with the "P" clamp on the larger diameter plastic end and the original screw hole. Its very secure, no car modifications required and slides like new.
