heater bypass
« on: May 07, 2021, 09:17:21 PM »
does anyone have any experience with either blocking or bypassing the heater water on a 2.0?

i want to either block or bypass the heater core onmy 73 2.0 and was wondering if it is essential that the water from the head/intake manifold is allowed to.flow from the head or if it is advisable tojust put in anvalve to block the flow.

ialso, do.airnconditi oned cars have the water blocked or rerouted around the heater core?

i hwve fabricated a bypass system that reous the water around the heater core but was wondering if in ould silply install a valve to block it.

Specifically, no, I don't have experience as I swapped my engine to a 2.3. That said when I got my car ('73 2.0) there was no heater control valve at all. I don't know if that was factory designed that way, or that someone just deleted it. I had thought that perhaps the factory just ran hot water through the heater core full time and it was simply the flapper valve in the heater box that determined whether you felt the heat..., or not. It seemed like a Ford cost cutting measure if that was how it was truly intended.

The factory A/C - Heater combination set up for the Pinto is unique. Some who do the Turbo engine swap look for those A/C - Heater boxes because the fan does not mount on the firewall but the box itself. Hopefully someone with an A/C system can give more information. I simply replied because you asked about bypassing/blocking the heater water and I recalled that my car never had a heater control valve for the water. That got me to wonder of the system ever had a heated water control valve as designed???

One other thing is that the heater hose ran across the sheet metal cover for the exhaust manifold. A previous owner apparently had the hose break and that seemed to cause the manifold to crack. It would seem prudent to reroute that hose.

thanks for the reply...

inmessaged brian at racer walsh and he replied that it is ok to block the heater water line and that it has no effect on engine   cooling....

]Sure you can block it but your choke on the carb will or might stay in the rich cold start  setting , and the heater  water  valve does bypass  when your  control  vacuum  turns it off  ,  if it’s just the valve  is bad I have a new  one still in the box from ford , hope this is the info your may have been looking for , later Blaine

Blaine brings up an interesting point. Are you trying to block off the water (coolant) to the carburetor - or the the heater core? I had forgotten that those carbs used the coolant to regulate the choke.

No I am not but apparently Longtime ford man is , just letting him know the other dark side if he does just block it off , those valves would stick or later leak if you did not use them much and later would rust out , I have one of those NOS valve for a 73 I use to have , it bypasses when turned off . They were only used on cars that had A/C

actually the 73 models did not have a bypass or a block valve.

the water flows from the head thru the intake manifold and choke heater to the heater then back to the water pump all the time.

the cabin heat is only regulated by a flap that blocks off the air flow thru the hot heater core.

i wanted to block off water to both the heater core and the carb heater in summer.

i have no problem with the auto choke since i converted mine to manual choke and as well wanted the carb heater disabled in summer.

i installed a cable operated valve i got from amazon for $16 and used a bicycle cable to connect it to the lever that ususlly opens and closes the heater flap.

Yes the 73 models did have a water valve with bypass , but only cars that had factory A/C , if you have just the heater you are right , no valve or bypass and water ran through it all the time controlled by the manual damper door , wound up with the NOS valve I have when I worked at the ford dealer at the time I had a 73 with air , got two to have a spare , been carrying this one around for over 40 years , one day someone will need it along with a never installed pinto AM radio ,

This information was interesting to read.  Is this for all model-years or just the earlier Pintos with A/C?

My 1980 had the heater by-pass when the previous owner did not want to replace the heater core. I just replaced the heater core and I am now working on the compressor and dryer replacement. Hence, my reviewing this blog to see if there is anything that I am missing...and I saw this conversation and wondered how do I check this out?

Happy Motoring,

hi..
well.as i mentioned above my goal was to stop water flow thru both the intake manifold and the heater core to allow for cooler intake charge and cooler cabin temps in hot weather.

i have a manual choke so choke heating isnt a problem.

here are some pix detailing my install.

note the blue coolant plumbing fabricated from copper tubing and fittings to simplify routing and eliminate hoses near the exhaust manifold.

also note the placement of the shutoff valve with bicycle cable and retracting spring since the bicycle csble only pulls the valve one way.

the other end of the cable is attached to the unused flap control lever on the inside heater controls mounted in the dash, allowing the water flow and heating to be  controlled with the conventional levers.
