HEADERS - BEST BRANDS? WHO DOES QUALITY FABRICATION?
« on: February 09, 2017, 03:29:27 AM »
I've purchased two brands of headers so far, HR, (I think it was), and Dynomax. The HR I put on my stock '74 Pinto 2300 4sp in the 80's. I had a 2 1/4" pipe bent, and put a "Sonic Turbo" in the rear. It sounded good. The Dynomax I put on my stock 305 '79 ElCamino. They were supposed to be suramic coated. In one winter's time, they had surfaced rusted. I had to relocate the oil filter, because it was along the side and ALMOST TOUCHING the oil filter. I put the oil filter inside the left half of the front bumper. I had to go buy the oil filter relocation kit, and the kit did not nearly give me enough hose, so i had to go buy more hose to replace what was in the kit. I bought better quality hose, too. I got the Dynomax from Summit. The air conditioner bracket I bought with that didn't even fit. I should have returned the latter order. I'll not buy these brands again. I'm in Ohio, which has something to do with it, but both brands rusted through in three years. I want to buy a header, or a pair, ONCE. That includes reducers. I don't want to spend a thousand either. WHAT BRANDS OF HEADERS DO YOU ALL SUGGEST, for anything including Pintos. The next one I'll need one for is a '73 pinto. It's either a 2300, or 2000. I don't have this car yet. It has a bigger camshaft. It's one of the first two parts I'll need, that and the grille. I've heard there are different coatings, and they can be dipped. WHAT BRANDS OF HEADERS, and WHO CAN MAKE ME A GOOD, LONG LASTING THICK HEADER, with of course proper shape and flow? I don't need them "tuned".  Thank you.   Bill
If the price is good,want a '71,'72,or'73 Pinto,not a wagon,with small FORDv8,ideally289,with bigger cam,built for87octane,solid,stiffened body&suspension,man str,OR at least very good(prefEXC)body&interior.INTER IOR MUST BE BLACK.Perfectl y straight bumpers.If no engine,tranny,or exhaust,that's fine.

The only header for a 2300 Pinto that will both last and look good is the 4-2-1 cast iron Mustang / Ranger header. The Ranger 4 into 1 tubing header that's made out of 400 stainless steel will last the longest of the tubing headers, but it doesn't look near as good as the cast header. Only draw back with the cast header is its weight. It is a very nice looking better idea from Ford and will out last both you and your Pinto. Best tubing header for a 2300 Pinto WAS the Headman 2 piece header and the Hooker Comp header. Both are no longer made. Pacesetter is still made but at $199 each it is a poor choice. Both the Mustang and the Ranger header are dirt cheep in the Vega yards. I mean junk yards.

THANK YOU FOR THAT. After I read this I called JEGS, because I usually like to get something new. If this '73 pinto I'm probably going to buy, is a 2300 now, and not a 2000, JEGS has a stainless steel header, for $132.87, which would make my total probably not much more than $150.

Those headers from Speedway are race car headers and way too BIG. If you have a 2300 in a 71/73 Pinto I doubt they will fit without cutting and cussing. Get the cast iron header from a Mustang and it'll fit and they are cheep even when new on E-gay.

2.0 stuff for production 2.0 71-73 are no longer made.  Custom make or redo downpipe back to a solid 2" mandrel bent pipe.  Originally 1 7/8 pipe that reduced to 1 5/8 on bends.  I have info at home on how to do this if in fact it's a 2.0 car

2.0L headers are still made by Shoenfield in Van Buren,Ar. They are race car headers like Speedways (shoenfield to). They require you to mod the pass side motor mount. The have a 3 inch collector which is way too BIG for the street.

I got this one on my 2.0 1971... from googling it, It matches other Hooker Header ones i've seen on line. But the last person did some mods to the connection area, Hope it dosn't slow down my air flow much. The picture with me holding Header with red arrow pointing to the area, they did the flow overlap going the wrong way. If you get what I'm saying :) Last picture is before the header install.

Is the 2.3 head bolt pattern different from the 2.0??, Hedman still makes them for the 2.3 in a Pinto.

Being that the early Pinto 2.0 (EAO) is a German made engine and the later Pinto 2.3 (Lima) is an American made engine they are two completely different engines. The exhaust manifold bolt patterns are different.  The headers would not be compatible.

There was a Lima based 2.0 but they were used in later Rangers and Europe.  Don't let that confuse you.  Some places may list the 2.0 and 2.3 header as one and the same but they are speaking of the Lima 2.0 and 2.3 - not the EAO 2.0.

Come to think about it the Pinto had four distinctly different engines available over its build history. The 1.6 (Kent), the 2.0 (EAO), the 2.3 (Lima) and the 2.8 (Cologne). The 1.6 was British, the 2.3 American and the 2.0 and 2.8 were German.
