Title: header suggestions
Post by: ToniJ1960 on June 19, 2012, 08:50:18 PM
What is the cheapest simplest type of headers to get put on a 1978 2.3 wagon, that will still give a decent improvement in mpg and power? I think its time for new exhaust.

I dont want to economize to the point it makes no sense to do  it though. I just want to get it done somewhere and who knows who will even want to do it. It cant be too exotic.

A ranger header should be a good upgrade

Bolt header on and adapt exhaust pipe to header.
One of the easiest exhaust Ive done

I'm using a Ranger header on my '80 as well. It's a direct bolt on & since my exhaust was garbage, I'm just plumbing the new one off the header....

I think thats what I need to have done too. I know theres an exhaust leak and its so old I doubt its worth trying to patch it up. The las time exhaust was done was over  12 years now.

So the questions, 93-94 ranger header for 2.3 will work? What other years?

I suppose I need to get some gaskets and pieces so theres less excuses for why they cant do it. All help is appreciated.

Do these look right? What is that long tube for? Egr?

Yep, that's the one I have. That air tube should be pipe thread & a simple hardware store pipe cap should close it up. I need to check the Ranger forum to be sure. I have an Autometer A/F guage that I plan to hook to the O2 sensor to help me tune the Holley 2bbl. but you can get plugs if you want to close that hole as well.

This site taught me a lot. It can save you time & headaches to search your planned mods ahead of time.

BTW the Ranger forum refers to that air tube as 5/8" flare thread. If I can't find the right cap I think I may just weld it up & be done with it.

Look in the plumbing section at Lowes.
