Does anyone have any advice on brand of head bolts to use on my 1979 crusing wagon 1979 2.3

It has been about 10 years, but I recall the the Ford dealer actually having the better price. Back in 2008 I recall the price was somewhere between $25-$30. As a point of reference Rock Auto has the bolts sold under the Fel Pro name for $24.79 - less shipping.

 Do know that they will be the "one time use" torque to yield (TTY) style of bolt. They torque to a specific specification - and then are torqued an additional amount, usually 90 degrees.

  Rock Auto has then for $25 plus shipping, AutoZone has them for $36, O’Reilly’s and NAPA has them for $38. And that is the FULL SET.  Everyone sells the Fel-Pro brand.  But really can you imagine some little old lady taking her car to Ford and they charge her $450 for head bolts alone!!!


As it is $35+ for bolts on a gasket change is frustrating. The older bolts were not TTY style and reusable.  Also, if you get the upgrade gasket (1035)..., it use to be a lot, who know what it is now???


Ok, I guess I know, I looked and it is $65 for the high performance gasket Fel-Pro or Cometic, $19 for the regular gasket.

Lastly my 1988 Turbo Coupe donor engine did NOT have TTY bolts. I don't know the year, but TTY bolts came after that date.  There was a LOT of confusing information on the web and basically it was that every 2.3 Lima engine had to use the TTY bolts.  I think that came about because that MIGHT have been all Ford was making available after a certain date as replacements???  I later heard that there was a way to identify the bolts to determine if they were TTY or not and that one could reuse the NON-TTY bolts. For me it was too late I had already bought and installed the TTY bolts.

 You should check over at Turbo Ford , NATO, or the Ranger Station for a better undrstanding as for me it was 10+ years ago. Or if you value your time just pay the $35 for new TTY bolts. Just understand the proper torquing method because it is not what a older manual will state.

Some of the turbo guys are adament about using the 1035 gasket. Others use the regular. On a non-boosted engine I'm not sure the 1035 is worth the triple+ price. FWIW I run the regular gasket on my stock '88 turbo engine.

                          $   37.99
I'm debating on the gasket upgrade
Napa did not have it
Any tips on oil
For 1979 2.3 pinto wagon?

In general if the engine is good I'd run what the manufacture spec-ed.  Sometimes the season a factor. In my daily drive Mazda the summer is 10-30 and the winter 5-30. But I live in a mild climate either has not been an issue.


 The harder part is getting enough of the additives for the camshaft. It use to be the diesel oil had more additives but with newer regulation that is likely not the case anymore. That and so many cars having roller rockers today.


The good thing for the 2.3 engine is the early 90's Mustang and Ranger used roller rocker and will swap in. The Ranger though had two different types and the cam/rockers have to be matched.

If you have a set of the 12pt head bolts and there is nothing wrong with them, then keep using them. I also would recommend using the cheap 8993 head gasket. Both have been used well in excess of 400hp by a few ambitious enthusiasts. The 1035 won't help if your engine has gasket clamping problems like warpage or damaged surface s.
