Has anyone found a larger front disk setup for the 4lugs lately?
« on: September 13, 2017, 07:23:10 AM »
I'm pretty sure I am going to 5 lugs to get larger brakes(probably these from Speedway http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Mustang-II-Complete-11-Inch-Brake-Kit-Ford-5-x-4-1-2-Bolt-Pattern,2008.html ), but thought I should ask if there has been anything new pop up for an 11 inch setup for the front 4 lug setup lately.

Thanks,

ANDY'S AUTO PARTS  in Calif sell cross drilled vented 4 lug rotors, I use them in vintage races with Porterfield pads. Brakes actually get better and better each lap.
The older I get, the faster I was

Thanks, but are those the same approx. 9 inch ones as stock? If they are 11 inch, what are you using for the calipers?

I did a lot of intensive searching through last month on an 11" brake option that kept the stock bolt circle.

There are none.

Two things surprised me: 1. Nothing is offered for MIIs in four lug and 2. is no one seems to offer blank rotors. They all use Granada-style blanks and you'd think some custom hot rod supply would have them with no stud holes.

A lead I did dig up was the possibility of using 11" aftermarket rotors for an '87-93 Mustang, but the post about it suggested that the inner bearing needs to be swapped with another that's expensive and harder to find.

I broke down and went with stock Granada rotors and GM metric calipers ultimately so parts would be easier to get in the future. Now I have to plug and redrill the axles.
'72 Runabout - 2.3T, T5, MegaSquirt-II, 8", 5-lugs, big brakes.
'68 Mustang - Built roller 302, Toploader, 9", etc.

Maybe you just get braver with each lap and think its because of the brakes. The red mist will do it every time. Lets you do thing that you would never think you could.~~~Dick

Would not the Maverick (maybe early Mustang) 8" eliminate the 5 bolt issue at the rear? Seems easier/cheaper and I think it is within 1/2" of the Pinto/Mustang II rear width. Where the spring pads land..., I do not know.  I realize the initial question regarded the FRONT bolt pattern, but SC65 was talking about filling, re-drilling his axles for his rear to match 5 bolt.

Yes and no! Those rear ends are a little wider than the Pinto/Mustang II rear ends. Not much but some. I've read where the axles will fit Pinto Mustang II rear BUT they must be shorten on the spline end or they will bottom out in the third member. Seems like it was only 1/4" or 3/8" but had to be done. Don't take my word on this as it's very far back in my head. BTW the pads are close enough to fit ok.

Yeah, you can use the Mustang rears for the Pinto. I may end up using a 9inch if I am able to go with the 351C engine and manual trans.
but for right now I was hoping to go cheap and use the 4 lug MII 8inch rear I have. I can order axles for it, but if I have to do that I will just get a Mustang 9inch since the cost for a used Mustang 9 inch (without trac lock) isn't much more than just the custom axles. At least around here.

Oh, speaking of Mustang rears, the 65/66 is slightly narrower than the 67-70 and a closer fit. But either is pretty close. You just have to be careful with tire width, and either move the leaf spring perches slightly or just make the mounting hole a tad larger. About half an inch on each side or less if I remember right.

I knew that years ago there wasn't a larger front disk option for the 4 lug, I was hoping maybe things had changed. But it seems like there is even less available for our Pintos than there was 10 years ago instead of more.

Going 5 lug will be the easiest, just not as cheap as I was wanting for now. I have to buy wheels/tires anyway once I really get back into it, so that isn't a big deal at least.

Thanks,
Russ

What is it about the Fox body front discs that don't work? They have the correct (4 bolt) bolt pattern. There are a Bazillion of them around.  Is the Pinto/Mustang II spindle depth too short?  If it was wheel bearings you would think there was an easy fix with different bearings - or inserts to accommodate different bearings. I was tempted to try fitment but needed 4 wheels rolling to dispose of my Turbo Coupe and so just 'never went there' when I had the chance.

good question.
I am sure someone out there knows for sure. I just did a very quick comparision on the Rockauto site, and all I could determine is that the part numbers and diameters are different.
If I remember (if I need to change my 89's brakes that is) I'll save the old rotors and see how they look on the Pinto spindles. Would probably have to see if the Pinto bearings fit in it first.

Although from the RA site comparision, the diameters aren't very far apart, might not be worth the effort even if they fit.

Thanks,
Russ

Dick... the brakes do not fade from heat, but indeed do get better each lap.  First racecar ever that brakes did not get less effective.
I also use Porterfield rear race shoes and drums. The last vintage race I ran before brake upgrade, at Kansas Speedway, I had to brake off the banking about 2 weeks earlier, throw out an anchor and a drag shoot to make turn onto the road portion. A bunch off cars lost their brakes and stuffed um. I vowed to get better brakes then. Andy's Autoparts and Porterfield pads came through, and are amazing.
And yes the Red Mist has visited me in the past.

People on here are always talking about how they need bigger brakes on their Pinto. My last race car Pinto was an 80 model. Completely stock brakes with Porterfield pad. I could out stop every IT-B car I ever raced. The 74/80 model brakes are much better than people think. The NAPA semi metal pads worked almost as good too. I have a picture of my race car Pinto entering an 120 deg turn to the right. I'm hard on the brakes and the nose of the car has drop'd maybe 2" with no fade or tire smoke. Long time ago.

There was mention of using a bearing spacer because the Pinto spindle is longer. Honestly I didn't go much further than looking up the "special" bearing number, which returned prices from a few industrial suppliers in the $30 range...each.. ..without the race. No thanks.

The thread was on 24 hours of lemons or Grassroots Motorsports IIRC.

And as an FYI, '67-68 Mustang rear ends look funny under a '65-66 Mustang. I had a '65 that was wearing one briefly and that's why I didn't use the 8" out of my '68 Mustang. The Fox Thunderbird rear end is WAY too wide.
