Gas Tank: Add a Return Line Question
« on: November 27, 2020, 08:38:58 PM »
The Mustang gas tank I will be using in my Pinto-Mustang project only has a supply line.  I need to add a return line.  Does anyone have a suggestion?  I am thinking I will have to drill a hole at or near the top of the tank and weld a piece of fuel line into it, then connect the return line to it with a piece of fuel hose. Has anyone done something like this?  I'm sure someone has a better idea...

Also, the Pinto tank had a vent in the top of the tank.  I kept it when I got rid of the corroded Pinto tank.  Since the Mustang tank isn't sealed, is it necessary to vent it?  The gas cap on vintage Mustangs is a loose fit so it doesn't get pressurized or go into vacuum.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Not sure what tank you are using but search on CJ Pony parts for fmef010 and see if that sending unit might work for you.

Be very careful welding on a fuel tank. It is very difficult to get rid of all the fumes. Maybe a better approach would be to put the return into the fuel sender.

nnn0wqk:  The gas tank will be brand new...just ordered last evening so no gas has ever been in it.  Thank you for putting Safety First!  Read on as I no longer have to modify the tank since Mattb enlightened me about the sending unit with the return line!

Mattb:  I ordered the gas tank kit from CJ last evening but wasn't aware that they carried a sending unit with a return line.  This is PERFECT and completely solves my problem!  Thank you for researching and sending to me.  I had thought about modifying the sending unit that comes with the kit, but now I won't have to.  I will be calling CJ's to see if they will swap the regulate sending unit for the one with a return line and I will gladly pay the difference.

Does anyone see a need for me venting the tank?  I think the vent line would go to the charcoal canister that was in the left wheel well of the Pinto and does the carb vent.  Since the gas cap isn't a sealed fit, I think it would be a waste of effort and the vent valve and hose...

Thank you for the replies.

Rob

The kit that I ordered last night has already shipped so I have to order the sending unit with the return line separately, ten return the one without the return for credit.  While I had CJs on the phone I ordered a Mustang trunk lid.  It is on sale for $118 but they want $157 for freight!  I have ordered quarter panels, fenders, and other items larger and heavier than the trunk lid and they have been shipped UPS.  Not sure why this has to be truck freight?!!  Anyway, I will make the 4-hour driver to Harrisburg and spend about $50 in gas and pick it up at their store and save a pile of $$$.  It will give me an excuse to visit a buddy that lives in PA.

Yes, CJ Pony and Classic Mustangs have video clips on removing and installing not only the gas tanks but fuel sending units and lines on their web sites. Their printed catalogs also prints the website links as well. Be safe as we need you around! 😎
