full left or right steering pump stalls motor
« on: August 03, 2013, 09:37:56 AM »
Anyone every had this happen?  When the car is sitting idling and i turn the wheel full left or right the motor will stall out.  The tach shows about 550 rpm then nothing as it dies/bogs the pump out.

normal driving the pump seems ok but might have some sort of drag.  is it possible to hook up the lines to the steering rack butt backwards?

cheers

Fairly normal. Fully (to lock) creates a big strain on the pump. It will destroy the pump if you hold it there long enough. Might check to make sure your idle's not set too low. 550 is about where it should idle with lights on, in gear (if auto), and a/c on  (if equipped).

thanks for that.   i wasn't sure if normal or not, seemed a bit odd to kill the motor that easy.
yes auto no lights on though just running normal.

thanks

Should be a bleed off in the pump to relieve pressure when you reach maximum travel and you can hear it, without it you can blow the pressure hose.

It's an internal pop off valve inside the pump, when you reach full travel the pump keeps building pressure until something gives, thus the reason for a pop off valve to release pressure, I'd say you need another pump.

Biggest thing with rebuilt or new or even old pump is to make sure it does not run dry even for seconds when first filling it up. I have seen them score pump body to make noise forever by simply being slow to get more oil in there. As little as five seconds dry can score the pump if the parts scrape off oil to be dry. I always stand over the reservoir and have someone else crank the motor, that way I lose no time chasing the reservoir level, a good working system can void all oil in it in like ten seconds or less.

If old pump not making noise I wouldn't change it, the hose could've been ready to blow anyway. You NEVER hold power steering on the limit for more than a second, and risking things doing that, the pump ramps up to full output and the bypass (your 'bleed off') bumps open trying to save pump and lines. Sometimes it can't do it............ ..the systems are not supposed to be abused like that.
