fuel cell-just how bad are the fumes inside the car?
« on: September 09, 2014, 01:16:02 AM »
I really wanted to avoid using a cell. Mainly from the feedback here about things like gas smell inside the car. But I may not have any other realistic options.

Once (if ever) this car is done it is planned to be my daily driver, and depending on where I am working it could be 20-30 miles drive. In the Phoenix area, so high temps and lots of sunlight are a factor.

74 wagon, so I can't seal off the trunk like a trunk car. I have been thinking of lowering the cell a bit so I could put a hatch above it to close it to the interior of the car except when having to put gas in. Or I could just run a floor back from my custom built battery/storage box, which is about 4 inches higher than the cargo floor. Admittedly that would be easier, but I also need to have room for a spare 15inch tire on top of it. But it would be great for tools/jack storage.

My other possible option is to use a 70's GM gas tank, the type that have the filler neck behind the license plate in the rear bumper. I haven't been able to find one of those cheap enough to play with to see if it is even feasible yet.

I have already cut out the spare tire well so I could go with a different tank. It wouldn't be that much more work to cut out the rest of that part of the floor if needed.
And even though I have already mounted the battery, if I go with a cell I will just make the frame to hold the battery as well like I've seen done here. In reality that would only be a couple of feet more and I haven't cut the cables yet. Then I'd use the current battery location as a subwoofer box probably.

Looking for any thoughts/ideas/suggestions/beware of's.

Thanks,
Russ

Fuel cells / tanks have to be vented outside the vehicle.

If fumes are getting inside , someone did something wrong.

Friend of mine had a street/strip Chevelle wagon and he had one of these in the back just inside the gate with aircraft style cap, ran the vent through the floor, could ride all day long and not get one whiff of fuel vapor..

That was what I had thought, but I have seen several people here talk about getting fumes in the car. Possible that they don't have the cells, and are just speculating.
If that isn't an issue if it is done properly then that is most likely what I will do.
The only part that will be inside will be the top/filler.
Thanks!

had a fuel cell in my 80 351 pinto with the glass  tailgate ..simply had a piece of carpet covering it .. have one in my 69 stang now .. it has a sealed off trunk .. you have to run a vent line to outside the cockpit ..
