Title: Found the issue
Post by: Greymare on October 18, 2014, 10:46:10 PM
Well I started working on the wagon today and was hoping to be able to only change the belt. I pulled the timing cover and was going to spin the cam to put in time. It wouldn't move so rather than force it I pulled the valve cover. Well much to my surprise the cam from 3-4 was covered in some amazing rust! I am not talking surface rust. This was some crazy rust to the point it had white crystals forming from out of the cam bearing towers. I am not sure how this happened so I pulled the head and went on a search for a head. I have been offered a engine from a 1987 Ranger 4 plug head injected 2.3L with a blown head gasket for free!

1) Will this engine work in my 76 wagon?
2) Will my intake, exhaust, and AC bolt up?
3) any surprises I might run into?

Thanks in advance for any help.

are you planning on putting your carb on it or using the EFI? If you're getting rid of the injection and computer then you'll need to figure something else out for ignition because I don't believe those engines have a hole for a distributor.  I also think the intake ports are different shaped.

Well I was planning on using my intake and exhaust. I guess I will have to take a look at the intake ports. I know for a fact that it has a hole for the distributor. Any thing else?
