I just took my 72 wagon to my favorite non-national chain exhaust shop (a place in Clarksville TN I've used for 15 yrs), and had a new system custom bent, with muffler, for $100 bucks. All welded, no clamps to leak, etc. :) I doubt at 40 yrs old that the exhaust in place is original. I know mine wasn't. lol

i was going to recommend that you go to a local shop and have them redo it. i can only see 2 complete bolt on systems but you will be looking at more than $300 for some reason.
Definitely take it to get it done at a shop, i can give you the part numbers tomorrow if you want see if you can get it cheaper some where else.

Any suggestions for a good-sounding muffler for the little 4 bangers?

I know everyone is going to chunk rocks at me, but I run a old style glass pack on my 2.0 powered T Bucket and it sounds good to me.

Not I, my good man. ;) I have a glass pack as well, and agree the sound is quite pleasant. Sounds like something bigger than it is, and isn't 'ricey' at all. lol :) Exhaust note/tone is extremely subjective, though. :)

i never heard a glass pack on a 4 cylinder but im sure it sounds good. i have them on my truck and i love the way they sound.
now i have put flow masters on a 4 cylinder and depending on what car some sound good other sounds reallyyyyy bad.
i like the way the stainless borla muffler sound. the twin loop muffler will give you more a eru sound to it. if thats what your looking for.

Zoomies and a small cam sound good too. Wait, you can't run zoomies under the hood!! :o

actually i need to take a picture and show it to you guys. there is a honda civic here in town that he drives it around that has no hood on and he made some ugly zoomies. it looks soooo bad and it sounds sooooo bad, i will take a picture next time i drive by him and take a picture. i see him at list once a week. is funny.

I used a Magnaflow single in/dual out stainless muff (off E-bay) with custom bent 2.25" pipes.Bout $265 Total. Sounds Great! Otto N Austin

I wonder if I tel them my 78 is a 72 theyll do mine without a catalytic convertor

Just tell them to leave it out and that you will cut and install when you get home ::)

I dont know if its changed now but they always told me in Missouri by law if they do it they have to put one on. Fortunately they never could tell mine had lost all its guts already :)

I run a pacesetter with a 3 inch glasspack that slowly reduces to a 2.5 flowmaster, so Manny people mistake it for a v8 when they hear it lopeing at idle, very unique sound at high rpms, and no cat

Have them make up all the pipes with out the cat and tell them you will install at home for the track.

I'm running a raptor.They have a very nice sound on a 4 banger,next best thing to a glass pac.
