Post by: Pup70 on October 25, 2011, 07:55:03 PM
I have 77 cruiser wagon with a 2.3 that i rebuilt with a mild cam and 80 thousandths of the head. it runs great but just has to much blow by to the point i get puddles in the air cleaner.  It has a new oil cap and pcv what else could cause this.

Thanx
Mike

Have you checked to make sure the oil seperater isn't plugged up or anything. If the pcv system isnt working it will do what your talking about. Make sure you have vacuum to the pcv valve. If all of that is in good working order then you possibly have a ring issue. Did the engine just start doing this or has it done it from day 1?

i have maybe 500 miles on it and it just started doing this a little while ago all the rings are new as well as the bearings i ridge cut the cylinder honed them ran a gauge to make sure they weren't ob longed gauged the rings.  Reassembled and all was good but now i have this problem and im one small step from dropping a V8 in then deal with this 2.3 any longer.

Let me ask you this...when you installed the pistons, were the rings all lined up to each other or did you space them around the piston?

I think RSM means the split in the rings, were they lined up or one at top, one bottom, one left, one right?

ok...just curios on that one. Have you ran a compression test to see what you have? That might give you some indication as to whats going on.

The separator is below the intake manifold on the block. There is a hose that comes off of it and the pcv valve fits into that hose. It's unlikely thats the issue but it's worth taking a look at. A 79 wagon I bought about a year and a half ago had the same issue your having. I got to checking everything and found that someone must have had the engine apart for a while. The separator was full of junk...from what I have no idea. Once I removed it and cleaned it out it helped the problem but the main problem was that the engine was just worn out. Like I said before, a compression test can tell you a lot. Hope this helps.

On the block , the pcv has a hose that goes to it....BTW did you do any work to the top end IE valve job or replace the valve seals ?

that was ok but i bigger issues now the number 3 piston broke a piece of the op and bent a intake valve.  So if any one know a good machine shop near me let me know or i might sell it as is for the right price

Where are you ?

I know a fellow in CA with a 2.3 turbo that will/may part with it. He had it built for a 76 Pinto & lost interest. Never ran the engine.
If I remember right, it also had a C-4 & 3k stall converter.

Sucks to hear you have some internal problems there Pup70. That 2.3 w/turbo that Reeves is talking about would be a lot easier on the wallet and a time saver over installing a V8 like you were talking about. I really wish I had done that instead of the V8.
