Title: Esslinger markings?
Post by: 76hotrodpinto on April 06, 2015, 11:57:35 PM
Is there a way to tell if a car has the ess head in it, without taking it apart?

Use a magnet to see if its aluminum. If its a steel head, remove the valve cover to see if it is solid lifters. All their heads are solid lifter heads.

Is the aluminum one the"arca". No numbers, names or other external indicators?

Not yet. But I have found a pre-deq pinto that the owner says has 48,000 on a crate motor with an ess head and 4v carb setup. For CHEAP! Like $800! But I have a hard time believing  he knows what an esslinger head is, and not charge more. Alledgedly runs well enough to drive back from an hour out of town.

I'm going to check it out. Regardless of the motor, it's still pre-deq. Supposedly has a solid body. It's not a trunk model, but I can live with that.

The pinto gods are smiling upon me today! Good solid body, other than battery tray. And yes, it is an esslinger n/a head! Not the aluminum one, but I'm not complaining. Has a .080 over crate motor, ess head and 390cfm 4v with a t5 trans. Who's a lucky boy?!? Dropped the cash on him and going to try to pick it up sunday.

I was only looking for a decent body, that I didn't have to deq ever again.

I'm chewing my nails to the knuckles in anticipation! Can't wait to get my hands on that head!

I've heard that aside from the consumption of nail collagen, the joint cartilage is helpful when cranial anticipation exceeds patience parameters. Of course, a good cosmic flow bench can alleviate some of the cerebral turbulence ;D

i find it highly unlikely to take a stock block 80 over....id do some checking as it may have a aftermarkt ford motorsport block..... that would explain the extreme overbore. and it might even be a tall deck... if its tall deck it will measure out around 5/8 to 3/4 of an inch taller than a standard block...

most stock blocks wont go much over 40 over without requiring sleeves..

IF ITS A AFTERMARKET BLOCK HE FELL IN A PILE OF CRAP AND CAME OUT SMELLING LIKE A ROSE

I'm pretty sure it's a factory block, also pretty sure it's not 80 over too. I don't think the current owner built it. He said it has a 5 speed from a mustang2?!? But I wouldn't care if it that head was bolted to dead opossum in there. That's really just a cherry on a mostly rust free pre-deq cake.

As I looked through my Old Esslinger and SVO catalogs, you have indeed a rare treasure. Notice the shape of the intake runners, and Only Esslinger intake manifolds fit a Esslinger head. That honey FLOWS, unless of course you're sitting on an ARCA Truck series motor, then its a DAM Spillway! Green is the color of my World , Envy showing at my Fingertips. More specifics when you get her home! ;D

OK I got a couple questions. From the pic it has a esslinger valve cover, and prolly intake unless its a offy intake. But you said its not Aluminum so that rules out ARCA,SVO and Aluminum D port which brings me to ask why your so sure its a esslinger head. My guess is its a factory head that at most was worked over by esslinger not something custom don't get me wrong for 800 still a good price but its not anything super fancy but it could be ported which is a plus and maybe even cut to increase compression.

Also just a FYI even if it was aluminum the big giveaway that its not an arca is the fact its got factory alternator mount and Arca heads don't have provisions for that kinda stuff last time I checked.

I'm not certain that it isn't aluminum. I didn't check with a magnet. He insists that it's an ess crate motor. I found the ess online catalog, with pics of the crate motor. I'm leaning towards believing him now. For some reason, I thought they came painted black, but I see they come in blue too, or maybe only. It has the aluminum water pump (or looks like the one in the catalog, not the one on my pinto)and the cool pulleys and the ess timing pointer. Along with the same big as oil pan. I'm pretty sure it's an ess crate motor, I'll know for sure when it comes home and goes under the wrench. It is definitely a decent 74, and honestly, that's enough.

I don't think he built the car. He just didn't seem competent under the hood. The only reason we have to wait to take possession, is that he lost his title. So he doesn't seem to be very organized either. If he did have the paperwork for the motor, it's probably with his lost title.

If its aluminum you should be able to tell by looking at it. Pretty sure esslinger doesn't paint the aluminum heads on there crate engines only iron cause it can rust.
The motor also has a timing belt cover when you get it home id look under that and see if it has the esslinger adjustable cam gear and if it does is it the older version or newer.

Running on assumptions, but he's had it 7 years, and I really can't see him doing an engine pull/install. So I'm thinking it has to be at least that old. The tricky part for me, is I am looking for a body, found a good one, but with this possible engine. But If it is an ess crate motor, and he doesn't really get it, I don't want to be drooling on it. I just asked a couple of real basic questions, checked the oil and kinda glossed over it to make him think I'm just body shopping, and the motor is just a way to get it home. It wasn't shiny aluminum, if it's an aluminum head.

Like I said for 800 once he gets the title I wouldn't pass it up even if its not an esslinger crate engine. Heck the valve cover alone is like 140 by itself. lol

I'm getting the impression there's more going on with the title issue than he's letting on. I think it may not be in his name, or maybe a lien on it.

Its got a stock timing belt cover which will not allow the Esslinger upper pulley to clear. Been there / tried that as far back as 1985. Just not enough room. And Esslinger crate motors do not come with any cover.

All for not, I guess. I got my money back from him. Something shady is going on with the title. The search continues...
