Title: Engine ID
Post by: Bigfoot79 on July 07, 2012, 11:12:05 PM
Hey guys, I was hoping for some help ID'ing my engine. It's in a sand rail I just bought. I was told it was a 2.3 but that was all the info the seller had. I've checked the fomoco site and must be to ignorant to figure out the casting on the side of the block because im no closer to an answer. Hopefully one of you can help out. The casting under the exhaust is 08EL 6015-BA.  That casting is near the front of the block, closer to the middle of the block there is also 7GO8 cast in it. Thanks in advance for the help

Bigfoot... the way that I tell them apart is buy the distributor placement. 2.0's are really close to the timing belt and the 2.3 are roughly 5 to 6 inches away from it. Hope that helps without getting into all the numbers. I'm new to these motors as well.

I own two 2.3 and four 2.0's

Another way to tell th difference of the 2.0 & 2.3 is the location of the oil filler cap, and how to remove the cam. the 2.0 has the oil cap in the front, 2.3 in the rear. Also at the back of the 2.0 head there will be a camshaft retaining plate. The cam is removed from the rear of the head on the 2.0. The 2.3 has the retaining plate at the front behind the cam gear.

Unless you have a need to open the cam cover, the Distributor location and Oil filter location tells you what you need to know. There are subtle differences in the shape of the cam cover and the timing belt cover too. If you open the cam cover it's easy, 2.0L have 3 cam bearing towers, 2.3l have 4

Thanks for the quick replies. Using your tips it is a 2.3, oil fill is in the back and the distributor is about five inches. Is there a way now to break down the casting code to confirm a year and model that it originally came out of?  Thanks again
