Get collector or speciality insurance and you don't need emissions.

I have never heard where collector car insurance exempted someone from a required emissions test.  What Stated do you live in. Here in California ANY car 1976 and newer has to be emissions tested every two years. A new car is excluded for 5 years.  And, I believe certain waivers that are issued for low income (if they even offer them any more) require testing every year.

To the original poster: California usually leads the nation in smog requirements. But, a lot of states adopt their standards.  You might talk to a test center (rather than the state) and see what they say.  Hopefully an Arizona owner will chime in too.

Are they looking for the physical pump to be there or simply the emissions they think have been raised by not having it? Other ways to resolve it if the second choice there.

And your question as posed is impossible to answer. No year, no model or engine or trans even, we don't even know if it is a Ford or not. Not helping yourself there......eve n trans type can mean air pump or not. The state does not require certain equipment other than if you are in California, i.e., there are California emissioned cars and all the others are considered '49 state' models.

I take note of the specialty insurance (b) clause as 'requiring another car to be registered and used as the mainly used vehicle'.

Here in Texas once car is 25+ years old no more tailpipe testing, only a visual check, I'm sure they only look for the cat pretty much.

I guess when you add the age of any Pinto to the secondary requirement of collector car status (limited mileage) Tbucketjack was correct.

Interesting that Az. has 15 year old cars considered "collectable (with limited mileage)" but requires smog tests for daily drivers back as far as 1966. A 1999 car could be considered "collectable" in Az. I'm thinking that doesn't work well though since most CC insurance requires the car to be 25 years old to be considered a collectable and thus able to get the special insurance.

Here in Calif. if your car is 1975 or older there is no test needed regardless of mileage driven.  Not sure which I like more.  Oh well my '61 Corvair wagon, '63 Rambler American, '64 Studebaker Daytona and my '65 Sunbeam Tiger meet both states requirements. The '73 - Plymouth Valiant, Datsun 510 and Pinto fair better in Calif.

That only applies around the Phoenix/Tucson areas, out here where I'm at don't matter what year there's no smog checks.

Yeah, if you are not in an EPA 'non-attainment' area then the restrictions greatly relax. Here in Texas also, but they keep increasing the areas larger and larger saying the pollution is migrating elsewhere by the wind, pretty soon the whole state will be non-attainment.

My Mom 150 miles away in the woods does no smog testing either.

"My Mom 150 miles away in the woods does no smog testing either."

Sounds like it's time to move in with Mom! Interesting the "work arounds" regarding smog testing.  California actually has a few areas where a smog test only seems to be necessary on change of ownership.

BTW, how do others states work that. That being smog test on change of ownership.  Here in Calif. the seller is required to provide a passing test before the car changes hands. There is not even the ability to have the buyer release the seller from the obligation.  People play dumb ("What..., smog test - oh, it passed the last one"), but they are only valid for 60 days. So, you need to get the car sold or you have to retest.  If you sell by a "gentleman's agreement" on the smog test the buyer could then later come back and hold you liable for it. Even if he signed paperwork you drew up saying he released you from the obligation.  The Calif. DMV says that is invalid because the law states the SELLER is responsible and you can't circumvent the law. Imagine selling a car for a few hundred and the be liable for multiples of that amount after the seller holds you liable to meet the letter of the law!!!  That is probably why a lot of decent cars wind up in wrecking yards today.

Strange though because a dealer will (and I assume can) take a car in trade without the seller being liable for the smog.

Yep, I'm in one of those areas, one time only if you're newer than 75..

Just fyi, in AZ in the Phoenix/Tucson areas, smog is 1967 and newer. 1966 and older are exempt.
And re the collector car issue, most if not all insurance companies seem to have mileage limits on how far you can drive it and under what circumstances. For instance, driving to work is pretty much never allowed. It really is meant for trailer queens and people who only drive to and from car shows.

And if you don't own a late 80's or newer vehicle for a daily driver they won't touch you either..
