Title: Electrical Problem.. Help Please..
Post by: C. M. Wolf on January 31, 2016, 05:30:13 PM
Sigh.. I have a 73 wagon, 2.0 engine, and it's just not getting spark to turn over.. it ran a bit ago, pulled into the ally, it slightly sputtered & simply quit running.. now the engine turns but won't spark even a single cyl.. (I hate electrical problems..) :(

..Any suggestions on where to start tracing this down?
(Many Thanks in advance..)

Michael

Start with the simple check points cap and rotor, coil the get out the test light/VOM and check for power to the components

Timing belt?

I Thank you for your replies.. ;)

I recently changed the points, condenser, plug wires, plugs, cap, rotor, coil, & it was running fine after that.. til it 'hiccuped' & quit..  (I guess I could have mentioned that earlier.. lol)

..& for the 'Love of God'.. I hope it's not that damned timing belt, that giving out and trying to turn the engine can cause damage... but it's still in place, hopefully without jumping a tooth or 2.. sigh ..On the bright side of that timing belt.. I don't hear any kind of knocking or tapping as the starter turns the engine around.. (Timing belts & me don't get along.. something that won't live on the 2.9 engine I'll eventually replace the 2.0 with.. "Timing Gears" is the only way to go. Direct drive, works or don't.. & I love that noticeable "Whir" from the 'True-Roller" types.. ;) )

I'll do a better electrical component check as soon as it stops snowing & maybe warms a bit.. :(

Even if the belt did slip, it should spark, unless the distro gear is slipping(maybe check timing belt/ign. timing to eliminate). I'd be looking for shorts in the power supply.

Sorry, it could still be a timing belt problem.  I was cruising down the expressway and the 2.0 lost power and would not restart.  Found the timing belt was in place with tension but the teeth had sheared off near the crank sprocket.  Suggest checking the rotor to be spinning when cranking the engine.  If your 2.0 is stock, the valves should clear pistons with out a working belt (not a interference engine design).

1st of all, let me say... ya'll are wonderfully helpful, and all around 'awesome'! (..for a bunch of "Lil'Pinto-Lovin'Rascals") :D

..And ya'll nailed it.. it was that damned timing belt! (..have I mentioned how much I hate timing belts on an engine? lol ) sigh What a can of worms when they break or even just skip teeth.. Now the whole engine has to be re-timed to it's correct sync. ...which might not be so bad normally, but I've never done a ford 2.0 & I'm not even sure where the darned 'tdc' markers are on this engine, & does the crankshaft pully have to be removed using a pulley-puller or can it be pressured/tapped loose?

..Then just how much of the crankshaft gear,(main/bottom belt-cog), needs to be exposed to replace the new belt & do I need to remove any more covers to get to it?

.....Then, am I going to have to loosen the timing belt tension-er to get the new belt on in it's correct timing?

I do humbly & warmly thank ya'll for your help with this. ;) (..and if there's a good you-tube showing this stuff, please point me in that direction)

The 2.0 let is not to hard to Change,  if the teeth are striped off just lossen the tensioner , both bolts push on the belt and it should move against the spring , tighten the bolt with the slot , let go of belt, the upper cam sprocket has a pointer inside of it , it has to Aline with the dot in the middle of the head right below the cam bolt , the plate on the sprocket has one hole and the pointer points up, to the dot, may have to clean head from the grime , next remove the dist cap, you will see a scribe mark on top where the cap goes , that is #1 , you have to move all the fan belts , then put the crank at TDC , there is a notch on the plate that alines with a pointer , or you may have to remove #1 spark plug and get it close enough to see it , or temp put the new belt on and temp install the belt cover to see the TDC mark on the pulley and the cover , when all the marks Aline up release the tensioner , turn engine a few degrees forward and tighten the bolt , turn over engine untel cam pointer make is up on dot , check all marks , if on the money it will crank , set ign time ing , hope this helps .

Excellent write up pinto-one.  Just wanted to add a couple cautions.
1) After getting the belt on and releasing the tensioner, do not try to turn the engine backwards before tightening both tensioner bolts.  I did that once and promptly stripped the teeth off a new belt.  If you need to rotate engine backwards, make sure the tensioner is tensioned and both bolts are tight so that the tensioner does not move.
2) When sliding the belt on the engine, there is a tight spot between the timing pointer and the crank pulley.  On my engines it was tight but manageable.  A couple friends said theirs would not squeeze through the tight spot and they had to pull the crank pulley forward to gain enough room.

..Most Excellent.. ;)

..& I also found this tutorial.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0X_o59Mz96Y

Along with everyone's help help.. the new belt is now in place & the 2.0 fired up.. although there wasn't quite the smoothness nor power I had expected, it did run.. I suspect the timing may be off on the dist.. it's very hard to start & won't stay running.. sigh.. ;)

I very much thank everyone for all the help.. it would have been a pain without ya'll. :D

Glad to hear it's running again, might double check the marks again belt could be a tooth off too.
