Engine (motor) Mounts

I've had people tell me how "easy" it is to install motor mounts on a car- especially mine. Ruby RedHot, my '71 sedan, is not being very cooperative. I'm also thinking it's more like a two-person project instead of a solo one (those people who assured me it was "easy" didn't mention that either).  The main conundrum now is getting the mount on the passenger side. The 1600 engine has an external oil pump that's pretty close to the mount brackets. My question is: Do I need to remove the oil pump to install this mount properly and do I need to do anything special to do so? Thank you from a hair-pulling, madly frustrated Pinto Peep.  :)


P.S. My dear friend Rich has been assisting me via phone, but I am open to other tips from those who have done this operation.


P.S.S.  What the heck is that cable thing with the aluminum stoppers in the mount for!?

The cable thru the mount is a safety feature incorporated in later mounts to keep the parts from seperating. IIRC you'll either need to drill your engine bracket or snip off the cable. I hope you have a good jack and some stands or blocks to support the engine well. I think it was fairly easy to rock the engine over one side at a time. I seem to remember taking both nuts off the mount, rocking engine, removing old mount, installing new mount, rocking engine back, installing nuts, repeat. WATCH THOSE FINGERS!!

 The fingers are fine, and so is Ruby. Two of my neighbors came over and between the three of us and a couple pry bars we got the mounts properly mounted without me removing the oil pump! YAY!!! Because the cable thing was interfering with the brackets as well as the washers they were cut off. I was able to do the transmission mount by myself, but what a mess! lol  :P
One can never have too many Pintos!

Ehhh... The gas tank I can truly claim, but I had help with the mounts. Thank you, John.  :)


One of these days I will post the pictures of what was left of the old mounts.

I had the same fun in my 72 w/ 2.0. Looks a lot more straightforwar d than it turned out to be, and my $10 'simple improvement' involved much cursing, multiple hammers, 2 jacks, and finally a 4 foot crowbar. lol. The transmission bell hits the tunnel, limiting upward movement of the motor, unless...

Looking back at it, I think removing the transmission mount or crossmember probably would have allowed the extra 1/4" that was lacking, as it would have allowed the engine to come up further by permitting the trans tail to go down. <~~Eureka moment :)
