Driveshaft selection question
« on: October 12, 2011, 09:43:53 PM »
I cant seem to find an answer to this combo so here goes.....

An '80 hatchback with a 2.3L/T-5 & 8 inch rear axle would use which driveshaft? I have several yokes but want to know if I need to make a shaft of if one is perfect already.

areostar aluminum, rear shaft out of a 4X4 model...

1997, but there are several years that are the same.  I think it is 96 and up. its the rear driveshaft on the 4X4 model...  after some quick research I have found that the 96/97 is the ones that have the C4/T5 compatable yoak.. although the newer years may be the same.  there may be more but those two for sure... it will be 45.5 center to center on the drive shaft u joints. and make sure the ends are welded on not crimped on. I believe it was only the early shafts that were crimped 95 and earlier.  and one last note, you may or may not need a different rear u-joint.

I thought this fit the 6 3/4" small rear axle, not the 8 inch. I've never measured but I assume the 8 inch takes a shorter driveshaft because the pinion looks longer than the small rear.

When I put the 8" in my '72 with no other changes, I had to shorten the driveshaft 1 inch to keep it from bottoming against the tailshaft.

Done it on two Pinto (72/80) and never changed the length of the drive shaft.

I'll take a tape with me to verify length. If it needs shortened I have a driveshaft shop near me to do it. At least I know a T-5 & 8 inch combo needs a 45" shaft.

87-93 mustang 4 cylinders with the 5speed use a drive shaft that will work. Its steel so if you want and aluminum one you should go with the 4wd aerostar one.

If you have a 4 speed car, all you need to to is change in part of the drive shaft that goes into the transmission.. ....Just make sure that the u-joint will fit your drive shaft 1310 (I think)......The end that goes into the transmission can be purchased for the length you need....Or just get the side that goes into the transmission and put it on  your drive shaft from a T-5 drive shaft  ......You do not need to change the overall length of the drive shaft just the length of the (input shaft ?) the goes into the transmission.. .....It's very simple.....It is not  to hard to figure out......If some one tells you need a custom drive shaft they are taking your money.Period Rip Off Alert.....Shop a round......You do not need any custom work.......... T-5 (input shaft ?) can be bought by themselves as long as you buy the correct u-joint size....1310 .....I think it's not 1320.......

I have a 4-speed driveshaft for a 6 3/4" rear & an automatic shaft for an 8" rear. I also have a C4 yoke. If either shaft is 45" long I'll use it if I cant find a lightweight aluminum Aerostar shaft.

The C-4 yoke is the same as the T-5 but the over all length of the yoke  might be different..... The C-3 yoke and 4 speed are the same also...

Here is the thread that comes to mind from when I was researching the aluminum drive shaft. Don33 posted it.

I've read through that thread as well but it referenced using that shaft with an 8.8" & a 6 3/4" rear which didn't help me since I'm running an 8" myself. Now that I know an 8" & 6 3/4" take the same shaft I'm good to go.
