Ford c4 transmission
« on: May 27, 2013, 08:04:16 PM »
Hi all,
My c4 trans is leaking oil out the oring where the shift linkage goes in the side of the tranny. How bad of job is this to repair?  Do you have to remove trans from car? Not much room in there on my 72 pinto wagon!!!! :'(

Thank's, Moonshine

I've moved on to a T-5, but I would think you would have to drain the pan, drop the valve body and then likely be able to remove the selector to change the seal.  If the seal is external then it would be less work. at least it should be less. Even externally working in a tight space might not be easy.

Not to difficult, when removing your valve body just remove the bolts with the bigger head, If you take the smaller bolts out your gonna have a mess on your hands. when installing valve body make sure the gear selector and downshift selector are in the right position or you will never get it back in.

know that it is easier to put the valve body back on wrong  than it is to take it off ....two selectors have to line up correctly ....

I replaced the seal twice and it still leaked. What I ended up finding out is that the bore in the case was just plain worn out. It slopped so much that it actually would push on the upgraded double lip seal and still leak
 I ended up re-bushing it.
If you look close, Ford put a "replaceable" sleeve in the bore of the case (at least on my Trans case) also made of aluminum. Mine was very thin. I was only able to push it out with a custom made tool I machined at work. Then I turned a bronze bushing and pressed it in. I had to hone to size because it actually collapsed more than I thought it would. Once I was done it was tight and very smooth.

Unfourtunatly this all would ential pulling the trans down and a good amount, if not completly, apart.
