Difference in Ford and TRW Racks
« on: June 24, 2013, 02:10:19 PM »
I went to order a new power steering rack for my 78 cruiser and the parts store (Summit) claims there are different listings One is a Ford another is a TRW. Do they all bolt up and work the same? And if not how do I tell what I have?  Thanks

For a long time TRW has been a huge MFG of factory replacement parts.

If I remember correctly, inner tie rod ends can be replace in the Ford unit, but not in the TRW.

Not to try to confuse things, because my steering rack on my 78 wagon is leaking PS fluid, but when I first bought my presently owned 78 wagon in 1986 I was told the inner tie rods couldnt be changed only the entire rack.

A few months ago, I had one of the inner tie rods replaced and watched it be done myself.

How do we find out before we remove the rack which one we need? From what I see, the difference is the input shaft length.

Quick interweb search reveals: " Ford design has a one piece aluminum pinion housing. TRW design has a two piece housing."
