Differemtial swap
« on: March 07, 2014, 12:39:51 AM »
I am modifying an 80 Pinto cruiser wagon. 87 turbo fuel injected motor, totally blue printed, balanced, big valves, 5-speed. Purchased an 8.8 disc brake posi that will have to be narrowed to make it work. Is there a simpler solution? I've read an 8" Mustang II will bolt in without narrowing. However I've yet to find one with 5-lug disc. Any suggestions?

The MII 8" rear does swap right in but you will either need custom axles or you can re-drill the stock axles to 5 lug. I have a set at a machine shop getting that done now.

There are guys with the 8.8 out of an Explorer that swap the long tube & axle out for another short side & run them. A 67-ish Mustang 8" comes 5-lug & is only 1 1/2" wider & swaps in by simply welding on spring pads. I picked one up for $100 complete.

im running a 8.8...... i started with a disc rear end and it was too wide so i swapped in some fox mustang axles and drum brakes which narrowed it  1.5 inches... i run 15x8 rims with 5 inch backspacing and it all fits under the car.... if you want disc id go as suggested with a exploder rear end with one side shortened..... if you get it from a 4x4 you get 31 spline axles and either 373 or 410 gears from the factory....

Id like more info on this 8.8 swap from an explorer. i can get a good rearend from an explorer out of the pull you own parts yard for like $100 and it'd have disc brakes, 5 lugs and possibly a positrac already. The stock gears would be wrong for me, but could work still.

What needs to be done to make it fit a pinto? Does it need the axle tubes narrowed and new spring perches and shock mounts added or do i just use two short axle shafts in the existing tubes and change the spring perches and shock mounts?
