Did 74 Pinto's offer power brakes
« on: September 30, 2017, 03:22:50 PM »
I have 2 74 Pinto's both have manual brakes. I need to replace the master cylinder on one. Only the NAPA store can even order this, and said it doesn't say if it's manual or power. I have also looked at Rockauto, Parts Geek, Ebay and others. Most of the listings without any mention of power or manual. So I was wondering if maybe power wasn't offered in 74 or both manual and power used the same cylinder.  Thanks in advance

The master cylinder from non power to power will not interchange at all. The best place to find a new one is E-bay. The way to tell the difference is the rod that changes the motion of the brake petal to the master cylinder. Power brake master cylinders will have their rod made into the brake boaster where as the non power brake master cylinder will have one that sticks out of the master cylinder. Most time the rod will be in the box to make it smaller. Its easy to install in the master cylinder. Your own your on as to if the petals from non power will work on a power set up.
Its better to be a has-been, than a never was.

In 74 power brakes was not available, 75 up was   , even then they sent adaptors for the lines to fit , as for the difference between power and non power was the bore , power brakes had the large bore ,

Thanks guys for your help. I've owned a lot of Pintos a lot of years, but I'm still learning. I don't remember ever hearing before that power brakes weren't available on Pinto's until 75. Anyway got one ordered (Ebay).
